Timpson to have new solid waste collector following council's decision Tuesday, new budget, tax rate adopted

The City of Timpson will have a new garbage collector at the first of the year, as the council gave approval to Progressive Waste Solutions from Kilgore at their meeting Tuesday night.

Mayor Debra Smith said there will be little or no change in the monthly fee for residents, with the biggest plus being that each customer receives a roll-off container at no additional fee.

She said the city received 4 bids, with Progressives' being the lowest. Mayor Smith added Progressive Waste Solutions has some 250 commercial and municipal accounts across the region.

In addition the Fiscal Year 2014-15 Budget and Tax Rate were adopted for the City of Timpson. Mayor Smith said the new Tax Rate is up slightly at just over .31 cents ($0.313) per $100 valuation. She added Timpson property values took a million dollar hit with the closure of the concrete company earlier this year.

Approval was also given by the city council for the city attorney to prepare a bid proposal for the sale of the front portion of the city-owned property (the former Cobb Lumber Co. lot) adjacent to Hwy. 59, with a starting bid of $250,000.
