Digital mammography unit to be on-site in Center Sept. 12, available for all women, regardless of financial situation

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. Did you know breast cancer occurs so frequently in Shelby County, that this county is one of a select few where funds have been made available to provide free mammograms to residents?

Shelby County AgriLife Extension Agent Jheri-Lynn Smith says Shelby County is one of only 50 counties in the state of Texas that have funds available through a grant which provides free mammograms to residents.

The most important screening tools available are mammograms and clinical breast exams.

The East Texas Medical Center Digital Mammography Unit will be in Center, Friday, Sept. 12 at the Historic Shelby County Courthouse providing mammograms for women with or without insurance. Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance will be accepted and filed.

Ms. Smith says don't let a lack of financial ability stop you from having this important screening performed.

To schedule an appointment, contact Ms. Smith or Daphne at 936-598-7744. Remember, you must schedule an appointment.
