UPDATE: Investigation continues into "accidental" shooting death on Saturday

In what’s being described as an accidental shooting Saturday at a residence near Center, has taken the life of a Shelby County man.

 

According to a press release from Sheriff Willis Blackwell, 21-year old Taylor Keele of Center was pronounced dead upon arrival at Memorial Health System of East Texas in San Augustine.

 

The release said the sheriff’s office received a 911 call indicating there had been a shooting accident at a residence on County Road 1024. The initial investigation revealed that 25-year old Bret Anderson, also of Center, and Keele were handling a 9mm pistol, when Anderson unintentionally discharged the firearm striking Keele in the chest.

 

Keele was transported to the San Augustine hospital by ACE EMS.

 

Sheriff Blackwell said Anderson was arrested at the scene and charged with manslaughter. He added at the time of the press release the incident is believed to be purely accidental and the case remains under investigation.

 

Bret Anderson was arraigned by JP Pct. 4 Dude Jones, and was released on a $20,000 bond Saturday afternoon.

 

Funeral service for Taylor Keele is pending at Mangum Funeral Home.
