San Augustine County Jury finds woman not guilty of fraud

A San Augustine County jury found a San Augustine woman not guilty of not properly executing a church deed. 74-year old Margie Coffee was indicted on fraud charges back in 2012.

The charges date back three years ago when Coffee and her cousin Betty Clark decided to re-organize the Gloryland Pentecostal Church, which sits on land their grandparents deeded to the church.

Former pastor of the church, Shawn Husband testified Tuesday he saw tension among the congregation, and financial support was lacking due to no transparency.

When Clark decided to leave the church, Husband said he was advised by an attorney to restructure with a new name and become a non-profit corporation.

During cross examination, Coffee’s attorney pointed out it was illegal because members were acting as trustees of the church, which they were never elected to do.

There are other co-conspirators that will also have their days in court.
