Fraud trial underway for San Augustine County woman

The fraud trial of a San Augustine County woman got underway yesterday in Judge Craig Mixon’s First Judicial District Court in San Augustine. 74-year old Margie Coffee and her cousin, Betty Clark are accused of not executing a warranty deed properly to reorganize a church that’s located on their grandparent’s property in 2011. Coffee was indicted for filing a fraudulent document two years ago. During Monday’s testimony, Clark said the church’s former interim pastor, Shawn Husband wanted to take things over, and she and Coffee didn’t like the way he was conducting himself. Clark said she decided to give her cousin, Coffee a check and go their separate ways. Coffee reportedly didn’t want the money, but instead asked Clark, who’s the church’s treasurer, to hand over the church records. In 2012, the church was renamed and the deed was updated. Coffee’s attorney says in the deed left by the ladies’ grandparents there were no bylaws and that Clark created the bylaws herself. The church was originally called the Gloryland Church, and renamed as Apostolic Assembly of East Texas.
