San Augustine County sees short-fall with new Budget, cuts made

With property values lower in San Augustine County that means the county's new budget has to be trimmed by some $226,000. At their meeting last week, the commissioners' court voted to tentatively set the 2014-15 tax rate at $0.46 per $100 valuation, the same as last fiscal year. Commissioners are expected to approve the tax rate at their meeting Aug. 26.

County Judge Sammye Johnson said the budget shortfall has the county working to cut-back on expenses while keeping the same tax rate. This has meant each of the commissioners reducing their Budget by $21,000, some $50,000 was cut in the General Operations Budget, and another $23,000 was taken out of the Sheriff's Office Budget.

San Augustine County Treasurer Pam Smith says the county will take almost $129,000 in cash in their investment fund to help with the shortfall.
