The A.P. released its Top 10 high school football pre-season rankings yesterday, and the Tenaha Tigers are No. 3 in the Class 2A poll, just behind Mart and No. 1 Refugio. Cisco is the top team in 3A, with Newton is No. 5. 4A’s top team is Stephenville, with Carthage ranked No. 4, with Gilmer and Kilgore tied for 8^th. Top team in 5A is Aledo; and 6A’s No. 1 pre-season team is Allen.

 

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has Tenaha picked to win the Class 2A state championship.

 

Local high school football teams will be taking part in controlled scrimmage action either Friday or Saturday. Tomorrow, Center is home to take on Palestine; Shelbyville goes to Deweyville; Tenaha’s home to scrimmage Harleton at 5 p.m.; and Timpson goes to Groveton. On Saturday, Joaquin’s home to take on Huntington at 9 a.m., San Augustine will be home to scrimmage Colmesneil at 6 p.m.; and Garrison has Arp coming to town Saturday. The regular season will kick-off Aug. 29. Center Broadcasting is once again the home of Center Roughrider Football as Rob Payne and Chris Watlington are back for their 21^st season describing the action of all Rider games this season. Also, The Shelby County Game of the Week with veteran play-by-play man Don Wall on Q-100, KQBB.

 

Here’s a rundown of the annual ‘Meet the Team” events coming up. 

 

Meet the Bears will be held at 6 p.m. tonight at Bear Stadium.

 

Meet the Wolves is being held in the San Augustine High School Gym starting at 6:30 pm tomorrow night.

 

Meet the Rams will be held on Thursday, August 21 at 6:30pm in the Joaquin High School Gym.

 

Meet the Riders will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25 at Roughrider Stadium.

 

Meet the Dragons will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Shelbyville gym.

 

 

High school volleyball action: The Center Lady Riders are playing in the Central Heights Tournament today thru Saturday; and the Timpson Lady Bears are taking part in the Gary Tournament today through Saturday.
