Newton County sheriff placed on paid administrative leave

A Beaumont television station is reporting that Newton County Sheriff Eddie Shannon has been placed on paid administrative leave by the county commissioners’ court following his grand jury indictment and arrest last week.

KFDM-TV says the Newton County Commissioners’ Court voted unanimously in favor of the action Monday, and Shannon will remain off the job pending the outcome of his criminal case.

Shannon is an elected official and will remain sheriff.

Meanwhile, Chief Deputy Cynthia Hall will handle administrative duties.

The Newton County Grand Jury indicted Shannon on a charge of making a terroristic threat allegedly saying he as going to shoot the county judge and commissioners after becoming frustrated in a commissioners’ court meeting.
