Mahmood found guilty on 15 counts of healthcare fraud, no sentence yet

A federal jury has found the former owner of Shelby Regional Medical Center guilty on 15 counts of healthcare fraud violations.

U.S. Attorney John M. Bales says 63-year old Tariq Mahmood of Cedar Hill, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and seven counts of health care fraud following a four day trial before U.S. District Judge Michael Schneider in Tyler.

Court records say Mahmood and other carried out a scheme to defraud Medicare and Medicaid through the submission of false and fraudulent claims for over a million dollars.

Mahmood was a general practitioner, owned and operated several hospitals in the state, including Shelby Regional Medical Center until it closed last year.

A sentencing date has not been set, but Mahmood faces up to 10 years in federal prison for the conspiracy conviction and two years for each aggravated identity theft conviction.
