San Augustine to move forward with emergency notification system

San Augustine County Commissioners have agreed to put the NIXEL emergency notification program into operation county-wide.

Thanks to some research on the part of the county's Veterans Service Officer James Fowler, commissioners were advised earlier this week there would be no costs involved for San Augustine County to offer the service.

NIXEL provides a notification service for local police departments, county emergency management offices, municipal government and agencies.

Fowler said the notification service would assist with community announcements, meetings, and road closures and even boil water notices.

According to County Judge Samye Johnson, what's needed is for county residents to sign up for the service and provide contact information so they'll be able to receive either a text message or email from authorities concerning emergencies and other important information.

Judge Johnson said more information about the NIXEL service is coming to the county's website, as well as a sign-up push during the Sassafras Festival Oct. 25.

We'll have more information about sign-ups as it becomes available.
