Haley comes up short in home run derby; baseball state tournaments start this weekend in Center

At the College World Series Home Run Derby last night in Omaha, Nebraska, former Central Heights Blue Devil Hunter Haley came up short in his bid to capture the championship, as Texas’ Tres Barrera took home the trophy.

Haley, a current Oklahoma Sooner, one of seven selected for the event, hit one home run in the first round — failing victim to an explosion of home runs. Barrera faced off against high-school teammate and Texas Tech Red Raider Eric Gutierrez in the finals, but Barrera hit an outrageous 25 home runs to put the contest out of reach.

Haley was fresh off of his sophomore year at Oklahoma where he hit .294 with nine doubles, six triples, six home runs and 34 RBI as the Sooners finished with a 29-29 record.

The Center Youth Baseball Association will be hosting a number of state tournaments at the Center Youth Baseball Park beginning this weekend. Games will start tomorrow Saturday for the 8-year old and under Machine Pitch and Machine Jr. Pitch State Tournaments, as 21 teams will be playing July 5-8; in addition, the Dixie Boys’ 14-year old and Dixie Boys’ Jr., 13-year old event is held with 15 teams starting Saturday.

Then, July 12 thru 15, the 10-year old AAA South and AAA Jr. South Regional Tournament will be played with 17 teams involved; as well as the 12-year old Major Tight Base Tournament; and the District 9-year old and 10-year old Tournament with six teams.
