Chase lands man in jail after jumping off bridge

Authorities are saying alcohol and drugs figured into a pre-dawn high-speed chase yesterday morning that began in Center and ultimately ended with the suspect jumping off the Attoyac River Bridge.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Department officials are reporting 22-year old Alvin Jerome Davis II of Center has been charged with several offenses, including Driving While Intoxicated and Evading Arrest, and is suspected of being under the influence of PCP at the time of the incident.

Davis was transported to Nacogdoches Medical Center with possible injuries after being rescued by EMS.

Davis supposedly was spotted running a red light in front of the sheriff’s office after 4 a.m., which lead to the pursuit by Deputy Michael Griffin.

The chase went up Hurst Street, then back south, where Davis took out a sign at the south traffic intersection, and proceeded on Hwy. 7 west, with the air bag deployed.

With Deputy Griffin in pursuit, Davis’ Dodge Durango eventually experienced problems at the Attoyac River at Grigsby.

Davis left the vehicle and leaped from the bridge, landing in shallow water.

A ladder from Martinsville fireman was used to assist EMS and other emergency personnel in rescuing the suspect.
