Sports Round-up 6/6/14; Douglass brings home first state championship

At the UIL State Baseball Tournament yesterday, the Douglass Indians won their first-ever state championship as they take the Class 1A title by dominating Flatonia 10-0 in a 5-inning mercy rule game at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Douglass went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the state, finishing with a 33-1 record.

 

In the Class 2A Final in Round Rock, Sunnyvale takes a 13-3 win over Troy.

 

In the Class 3A Final in Austin, it was College Station coming away with a 5-2 win over Argyle in 8 innings.

 

The 4A semi-finals were played yesterday, and it was Victoria East over Richmond George Ranch, 4-1, and Aledo beat Hallsville, 9-1. The 4A title game is at 7 p.m. tonight at Dell Diamond.

 

In 5A, the semis and final are at Dell Diamond today, as Pearland meets Lewisville at noon, followed by San Antonio Reagan versus Humble Atascocita at 3 p.m. The 5A Final is at 11:30 Saturday morning in Round Rock.

 

The 22nd annual Darren Wilson Golf Classic will be held Saturday, June 14th at Center Country Club. This annual tournament is held to raise funds that go to the Darren Wilson Scholarship Fund. The event has raised over $140,000.00 to benefit area students. There will be a large silent auction during the day long event as part of the fundraiser. The format of the one day affair will be a six man scramble. There is a fee of $80 per player. This fee covers the green fee, eight iron shot off one of the par 5 holes. Lunch will be cooked and served by the Shelby County Cookers before the tournament kicks off. You better hurry and get signed up. The annual Preston Football Camp will be held tomorrow at Roughrider Stadium. The camp hours are from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information, contact Dwight Preston at 598-2470.

 

There will be a softball camp June 9th-12th at Central Heights High School (located right outside Nacogdoches on 259) Registration fee is $50 before start date, while Walk Up fee is $55. The camp hours are, Grades 3-5, 8am-11am; and Grades 6-8, 1pm-3pm. Camp Director is Coach Iyhia (eye-ya) McMichael who has played professional softball and played for TEAM USA! Center ISD Tennis will be having summer clinics for incoming 4th-6th graders, incoming 7th-8th graders, and incoming 9th-12th graders. The clinics will be in July and Augustine. If you have any questions, contact Leon Dykes at 590-9610 before 9:00pm. 

 

Tomorrow is an especially great day to go fishing in Texas because it's Free Fishing Day. While fishing is always free in Texas State Parks, on the first Saturday in June you can fish without a fishing license in any public water body in Texas.

 

There will be a gun show Saturday and Sunday at the Windham Civic Center in Center. G&S Promotions is sponsoring the event featuring new and used rifles, shotguns and handguns. The show is open from 9 to 5 Saturday and 9 to 4 Sunday. Admission is $7.
