Testimony begins in Deedra Grubbs' Capital Murder trial

Opening testimony began yesterday in Shelby County in the capital murder trial of Deedra Grubbs. The 39-year old stands accused for her part in the murder of Martha Acevedo-Chan, and shooting assault of Quinton "Sam" Watts and Marilyn Retamar in April 2012 at the Joaquin Country Inn.

The first day of the trial started much like that of her husband’s Bobbie Grubbs’ a couple of weeks ago, as the timeline of events unfolded leading to the Grubbs fleeing to Shelby County.

Among the individuals taking the stand were Mary Jane and Charles Cashdollar, who told of the events during an assault and burglary at their home in Montgomery County by the Grubbs two days before the Joaquin shootings.

The Grubbs reportedly took four firearms from the Cashdollar home, which were identified in evidence by Charles Cashdollar. One of the firearms was reportedly used during the shooting at the motel.

Ms. Cashdollar also said she received a number of injuries from Bobbie Grubbs when assaulted during the home invasion.

Court-appointed attorney Deck Jones is arguing Deedra Grubbs was also a victim of her husband, saying she was bi-polar, into drugs and very submissive to Bobbie and had nothing to do with the shootings.

A friend of Deedra Grubbs and a Montgomery County detective also took the stand yesterday. State appointed prosecutor Ralph Guerrero is presenting the state’s case, and is saying Deedra conspired with her husband to commit the shootings.

Bobbie Grubbs was found guilty by a jury last week and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Deedra Grubbs also faces the same penalty if found guilty.

Testimony continues this morning in District Judge Charles Mitchell’s courtroom.
