San Augustine City Council appoints Cabriales to council

At their meeting Tuesday night, the San Augustine City Council decided to appoint Claudia Cabriales to fill the Position 5 spot on the council.

According to City Manager Bruce Milstead, the opening came about when former council woman Tressie Simon took the job as director at the El Camino Tourism Center-which would have been a conflict of interest. Ms. Simon replaces the late Bill Simmons at the center. Ms. Cabriales was sworn into place at the meeting.

San Augustine City Council also gave Milstead the go-ahead to file application with DETCOG for a regional solid waste project grant, which he said no plan has been put in place for its use.

In other action, the San Augustine Council agreed to close some two blocks of Columbia Street downtown from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 20, for the Sam Rayburn High School Fishing Tournament Block Party. Milstead said some 700 to 900 participants and their parents, family and friends are expected to converge on San Augustine for the event.
