Local Sports Round up 5/1/14

Both Shelbyville and Garrison softball teams will enter the area round of the playoffs tonight.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons will play Zavalla in a Class 1A area round playoff game at 6 p.m. tonight at Nacogdoches High School. The winner will face Alto in the region quarterfinal round.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs will meet Sabine in a Class 2A best-of-3 area series at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. Game 1 is at 7 this evening, with Game 2 at 6:00 Friday, and if needed, Game 3 at 2 Saturday afternoon. The winner will meet the Woodville/Tatum series winner in the region quarterfinals next week.

 

In the state baseball playoffs:

The Joaquin Rams will play Kennard in a Class 1A best-of-three bi-district series starting at 6 tonight in Woden. Game 2 will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if needed, immediately after Game 2. The series winner will meet West Sabine next. West Sabine finished as the No. 1 seed from 23-1A and they have a first-round bye.

 

The Center Roughrider will play Rusk in a best-of-three Class 3A bi-district series starting at 7 Friday night at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin. Game 2 will be at 2 Saturday, with a Game 3, to follow if needed. The series winner has the Lorena/Caldwell series winner next in area. Center Broadcasting will have live coverage of the Riders throughout the state playoffs as Don Wall will be describing every pitch. We'll have the broadcast on Q-100 KQBB starting Friday night.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs will open the Class 2A playoffs with a home-and-home bi-district series against Hemphill. Garrison will host Hemphill at 7 p.m. on tonight before traveling to face Hemphill at 7 p.m. on Friday. If a third game is needed, it will at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hemphill. The winner will meet the Hawkins/Elysian Fields winner in area.

 

The Broaddus Bulldogs will play Dallardsville Big Sandy in a Class A bi-district series home-and-home series beginning Friday. Game 1 is at 4:30 tomorrow, with Game 2 at 11 a.m. Saturday, and if necessary, Game 3 would follow. The series winner has No. 1 state-ranked Douglass in area next week.

 

Stephen F. Austin State University head men's basketball coach Brad Underwood will remain with the university contrary to reports on several social media outlets. Reports surfaced Tuesday night that Underwood would be offered the head coaches job at Southern Mississippi. Underwood led the Lumberjacks to a 32-2 record in his first season, including a perfect 18-0 Southland Conference record and SFA's first NCAA tournament win over Virginia Commonwealth.
