Sheriff warns of possible IRS scam

Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell has informed us of a possible scam involving someone said to be representing the IRS. Sheriff Blackwell says a concerned citizen reported they had received a phone call from a individual attempting to obtain personal information. The party in question advised the citizen had fraudulently filed their income tax return, and attempted to obtain his address. The concerned citizen told the caller that he was not giving up his address, that’s when the caller stated that if he didn’t, he would be arrested. When the citizen stated, come on and arrest me, the unknown caller hung up. Sheriff Blackwell says this is not how the IRS conducts their business. You’re asked to inform your family and any elderly person that you may know of this scam. If anyone has any additional information in regards to this scam, or can obtain a phone number from such caller, Sheriff Blackwell says to please contact his office at 936-598-5600.
