Local Sports Round up 4/16/14; Rider Tennis doubles headed to Austin

Center Roughrider tennis doubles players Alec Lucas and Adam Reeves are headed to the state tennis tournament after placing second at the regional meet in three sets yesterday in Bryan. Whitlee Reed came away with third in girls’ singles.

 

In baseball action last night:

 

The Center Roughriders have kept their playoff hopes alive with a shutout win over Huntington, 2-0. The Riders improve to 4-5 in Dist. 20-3A, and have two tough road games on tap, heading to Jasper Friday and to Carthage next Tuesday.

 

In Dist. 21-1A, the Shelbyville Dragons come away with a 12-6 win over the Timpson Bears. The Dragons and Bears are both 6-7, with playoff hopes pretty well over. Meanwhile, the Joaquin Rams have solidified a hold on third place, and a post-season berth, with a 10-0 win over Martinsville. Nate Belrose continues to be hot at the plate getting a Grand Slam. The Rams are 10-4. In Chireno last yesterday, the Tenaha Tigers sweep a double-bill over the Owls, taking 13-10 and 10-6 victories. Tenaha is 4-7.

 

Thursday's games: Shelbyville at Chireno, Martinsville at Timpson, Tenaha at Cushing, and Joaquin has a bye.

 

In San Augustine last night, the Broaddus Bulldogs come away with a 7-6 win, to push their Dist. 23-1A record to 8-2, while the Wolves drop to 3-8. Broaddus is headed to the playoffs, currently in third place. Thursday’s action: Brookeland will be at San Augustine

 

In Dist. 19-2A, Garrison blanks Palestine Westwood, 12-0, as the Bulldogs improve to 8-2, and will be at Woden Thursday.

 

 

Softball last night:

 

The Center Lady Riders have one game left, and the season is over, as they’re shutout by district front-runner Huntington, 17-0. The Lady Riders are 1-10. Center will be at Jasper Friday.

 

In Dist. 21-1A, Timpson’s Kaylie Bush hits a grand slam and a two-run homer as the Lady Bears wrap up district play at 8-4, with an 11-2 win over Chireno. Timpson will enter the playoffs as the third-place team, and will take on Cushing in bi-district April 24. The site and time has not been finalized.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons have taken second in 21-1A, and will play Carlisle next Thursday in Nacogdoches in a first-round play-off game. Shelbyville defeated Martinsville, 15-0 last night, to wind up with a 9-3 dist. record.

 

The state’s No. 1 ranked 1-A team, Beckville finishes unbeaten with a 10-1 win over the Joaquin Lady Rams.

 

Meanwhile, the Garrison Lady Bulldogs are 11-0, after a shut-out win over Palestine Westwood, 12-0. The district-leading Lady Bulldogs wrap up the regular season at Woden Thursday.

 

Area track and field meets are being held today. Center qualifiers will be in Carthage, and Timpson, Joaquin, Shelbyville, Tenaha, Martinsville and San Augustine qualifiers are in Shelbyville for the Class 1-A Area Meet. Field events get underway at 2 this afternoon, with running events at 6 at Dragon Stadium.

 

Joaquin will be sending a good representation to the Class A Regional Tennis Tournament at SFA today & Thursday.
