Shelby County Commissioners' Court Meets at 9:30 Today

The Shelby County Commissioners' Court will have a special meeting at 9:30 this morning, and among the agenda items for discussion and possible action will be Commissioner Pct. 3 Travis Rodgers addressing the court in regards to the hiring of a full-time and part-time employee to fill recent vacancies on his road crew. The openings occurred with the recent death of an employee, and another leaving to take a job elsewhere.

In addition, Sheriff Willis Blackwell is expected to make a request for May 4-10 be known as National Correction Officers and Employees Week.

The commissioners will also consider the appointment of Bob Reeves to fill a recent vacancy on the Shelby County Appraisal Board. The action is prompted by the recent passing of board member Billy Walton.

In another action item, the court will discuss and possibly take action on the renewal of Property Insurance coverage through the Texas Association of Counties.

Finally, there will be discussion and possible action on the dispersion of the Child Safety Fee. According to Deanne Sample, County Judge administrative assistant, the Child Safety fee of $1.50 was adopted in the fall of last year, the same time as the Road & Bridge $10 fee, with the amounts added to every vehicle registration. The Child Safety feel can only be used for specific things, and a percentage must be sent to municipalities in the county. Ms. Sample said the county keeps an administrative fee, and the rest can be kept by the county or given to such organizations like the Children's Advocacy Center and CASA or others that the county feels fit the criteria. After several months of collecting the fee, the Commissioners will discuss when and how to divide the monies.
