Local Sports Round up 3/3/14

Both the Tenaha Tigers and San Augustine Wolves took tough semi-final losses at the Class 1A, Div. 1 Region III Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Tyler Junior College Friday. Tenaha suffered an 83-49 setback to Grapeland, while San Augustine comes up short, 75-72 in overtime to LaPoynor. In Saturday’s Region Final, Grapeland beat LaPoynor, 85-71 to advance to the state tournament in Austin this week.

 

At the Class 2A Region III Final in Nacogdoches Saturday, #2 Tatum gets a bucket at the buzzer to take an 84-82 overtime win over #1 Kountze to earn a berth into the state tournament

 

Meanwhile, at the Class 3A Region III Final in Huntsville Saturday, Houston Yates over Navasota, 103-86, sending Yates to Austin.

 

The girls’ crowned new basketball state champs Saturday:

1A, Div. 1, Plains beats Kerens, 57-44; 1A, Div. II, Nazareth over Calvert, 82-41; 2A, Wall defeats Brock, 48-44; 3A, Waco LeVega beats Argyle, 47-42; 4A, Canyon over McKinney North, 49-42; and 5A, Manvel defeats two-time defending champ Duncanville, 58-53. Duncanville had won 105 games in-a-row.

 

The District 20-3A basketball coaches have released the all-district selections, and the Center Roughriders grabbing post-season honors are Freshman Octavious Evans, Newcomer of the Year; First Team all-district, junior CJ Garner, and senior DeJalen Preston, who also was named academic all-district; second team all-district, senior Jacorey Bolton; and honorable mention, freshman Kyle Parks, junior Quinn Jackson and senior Jamarcuss Jones.

 

 

The Panola Ponies basketball team qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Regional Finals with a 91-74 victory over Bossier Saturday night. They will play Kilgore at 8 pm on Tuesday night at UT-Tyler.

 

The Center Roughriders won 2 of 4 at the Kilgore Oil Belt Classic Baseball Tournament over the weekend. The Riders took a 3-2 win over Kilgore on Thursday, and 2-1 against Pleasant Grove Saturday, losing to Central Heights, 5-1 and Nacogdoches, 5-2. The Riders are 8-3 on the season and will be in the Hallsville Tournament starting Thursday.

 

Howabout golf? The Center Roughriders are in Elysian Fields today at Crooked Hallow Country Club, weather permitting; and the Lady Rider linksters will be in Elysian Fields tomorrow.

 

 

Finally, at the H.O.P.E. Clinics’ Big Easy 5K Saturday in Tenaha, Summer Koltonski of Shelbyville was took first place with a time of 20:51; second was Sandra Kessler of Shreveport at 21:41.4, and third, and the first man was Jeff Hanson at 21:45.
