Nacogdoches County to release 20 sheriff’s office employees

Nacogdoches County will have 20 less sheriff’s office employees effective with the new fiscal year budget that starts Oct. 1. County commissioners voted yesterday to cut the position as Nacogdoches County is facing a $2 million budget shortfall for the second straight year. The court also voted to raise more in property taxes by some $411-thousand, or 3.05 percent. The deficit is attributed to a drop in oil and gas revenues. A number of county residents were present to voice contest to the personnel cuts in the sheriff’s office, including sheriff-elect Jason Bridges. The new $24.2 million budget will cut 13-full-time jailers, two detectives, one courthouse deputy and nine part-time jail staff members. In all, 23 percent of the jail’s budget is being trimmed. The commissioners said the cuts at the sheriff’s office were the only place left to cut. Bridges said, it’s definitely going to place a burden on law enforcement.
