Green light given to name stretch of Hwy. 21 in Nacogdoches County in honor of Country Music's Bob Luman

Center Broadcasting received word Tuesday that Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill making the Bob Luman Memorial Highway in Nacogdoches County a reality.

Luman was born and raised in the Blackjack Community. He went on to achieve star status as a County Music singer.

According to Nacogdoches entertainer and producer David Stallings who spearheaded the movement, he was notified by State Rep. Travis Clardy’s office of the news yesterday. He said next step is ordering and installing the signs by TxDOT, then a dedication celebration and concert by Luman’s daughter, Melissa Luman Phillips in the fall.

It was believed last month the highway naming may have to hurdle an obstacle when an individual approached the Nacogdoches County Commissioners’ Court wanting to name the road in honor of a war veteran. Stallings advised the veteran already had a statue in town and a plaque was in the courthouse.

The roadway to be named in Luman’s honor will be on Hwy. 21 east toward San Augustine. Stallings tells us it will start at the corner of a small county road beside Thrall’s Grocery on 21 and go east to the intersection of FM 95 at Chireno.

Luman lived right off FM 95 in the Blackjack Community.
