Panola College Mixed Media Art Display

Carthage, TX – “Mixed Media”, a visual arts display by artist, Corinne Jones, of Nacogdoches is currently on display for the month of June in the Fay Allison Gallery of the M.P. Baker Library.

The selected works reflect Mrs. Jones’ interest in knowledge and how it is gained or hidden. She is deeply interested in the natural world and these are the conceptual concerns that guide her work.

According to the artist, she is formally concerned most with color and surface texture achieved through layering of color and different materials. These materials include, among others, soil, plant materials, pastel chalks, ink paper, beads and anything else that seems appropriate or useful.

The images, which use plant specimens collaged into the drawing, suggest the sculptural characteristics of each specimen.  This method of building the image refers to the scientific tradition of botanical images—drawn, painted, printed, or the specimen itself, as well as the tradition of pressed flowers, often used to preserve personal keepsakes. Both are a form of memory.

She is also interested in the silhouette of natural forms.  “This is the manner by which we sense their presence or when we have a quick glimpse of forms in silhouette but know them to have three-dimensional form.  This is my search to better understand how meaning takes on physical form,” says Jones.

Corinne earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and her Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the school of art at Stephen F. Austin State University.  Born in Wilmington, Delaware and raised in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Jones, who is married to Charles D. Jones, professor emeritus in the SFA School of Art has lived in Nacogdoches for over 35 years.

Jones has sold art supplies, worked as a framer, worked as a secretary and taught drawing, 2-dimensional and 3-dimension design and art appreciation, including 13 years at Angelina College and seven years at SFA.  She retired from SFA in December 2012.

She has also served as a board member with the SFA Friends of Art and participated in the early planning stages of the downtown Nacogdoches Cole Art Center.

Her artwork is represented by Chandler Fine Art Gallery, San Francisco, California and Avis Frank Gallery of Houston.

Her work is currently on display in Italy and at Panola College in Carthage, Texas.
