May ends with another double-digit rainfall amount, 3+ inches Saturday evening

May went out wet as another 10+ inches of rain feel across the area for the second straight month.

Helped by Saturday evening’s thunderstorms that pushed us into another double-digit total, it appears we may have reached a point on the first of June where the rain chances may actually begin to dwindle as we head into summer.

Three-plus inches were common amounts received Saturday night. Reports say 3.5 inches fell in Garrison and Timpson, to just over three-inches north of Center, to a little over 1.50 near Shelbyville and San Augustine.

Center’s official weather observer Jim Forbes said he recorded 1.25 inches Saturday evening, to end May with 10.59 inches, which is 6.12 inches above average.

James Greer reports 13.26 inches for May at his casa on Hwy. 96 north.

Forbes says year-to-date, 40.92 inches of rain has fallen in Center, a plus of 18.29 inches from where we average five months into the year.

Tom Johnson in San Augustine reports the May rainfall was 10.24 inches, just an inch from SA’s all-time May record of 11.30 in 1975.

Temperature wise, Forbes says the high for May was 90 degrees on May 28 and the low was 55 degrees on May 1.

For the first time in months we are looking at a forecast this week that is virtually rain-free with warming temperatures.

For the second time in as many weeks the National Weather Service issued a River Flood Warning for the Sabine River at Logansport from Tuesday evening until further notice or until the warning is cancelled. At 8 a.m. Sunday the stage was 27.5 feet with the river to rise above flood stage of 28 feet by Tuesday and continue to rise to near 28.3 feet by early Thursday morning.
