Local Sports Round up 04/15/15; Rider Baseball gets wins at Rusk, district track meets today

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughriders will play Liberty Hill in a Class 4A State Semi-final game at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Georgetown High School. Kilgore is playing San Elizario in the earlier semifinal at 4 p.m. The winners meet for the 4A state championship at 4 p.m. Friday in Georgetown.

 

Regional qualifiers hoping for state this week

 

Golf:

 

The Center Lady Rider golf team ran into some problems at the Class 4A Region III tournament in Huntsville Tuesday as two team members were ill and the team was unable to post a score. The Lady Riders were in 11th place after the opening round Monday.

 

The Rider golf team will begin play today through tomorrow in the region tourney at Raven Nest Golf Club in Huntsville.

 

The Joaquin boys’ golf team and Timpson medallist Dustin Pledger played in the Class 2A Region III Tourney in Corsicana Monday & Tuesday, no scores or results available.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams begin play today in Corsicana.

Baseball

 

The Center Roughriders got back into the win column in Rusk last night as they take a 7-2 decision. Caden Rainbolt struck out 9 in 5 1/3-innings in relief. Josh Burns and Jacob Mitchell were 2-for-3 at the plate, with Mitchell and Dalton Horton getting two RBIs each. The Riders improve to 6-2 in Dist. 19-4A. First-place Carthage beat Tatum, 3-1, to remain a game ahead of Center. The Riders are scheduled to be in Tatum Friday.

 

The Rider JV also takes a 4-2 win over the Rusk JV.

The Center Lady Riders (0-6) game with Carthage was postponed due to weather.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams (9-2) game at Alto also postponed due to weather. Reports are they will try again at 5 p.m. Thursday.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons’ (9-2) game at Chireno was postponed.

Varsity and JV District meets for all area schools will be held this week.

 

The District 19-4A meet gets underway today in Tatum. Today: All JV field and running events; Varsity field and pre-lims; Tomorrow: All Varsity Running Finals,

 

The Dist. 22-2A meet will be today in Beckville. Field Events—9:00; Running prelims—1:00 & Running Finals—4:00

 

San Augustine is hosting the Dist. 23-2A meet today starting at 10 a.m.

 

The Center Roughrider Special Olympics team will host their annual meet at Roughrider Stadium on Friday, April 17.

 

 

DU Greenwing event rescheduled:

 

After having to postpone in March due to wet weather, the Shelby County Ducks’ Unlimited annual Green Wing event has been rescheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, June 6. According to Clint Tanner the location has been changed to a familiar site, Weldon Boles’ property off Old City Lake Road. Tanner said DU used that location previously.

There will be prizes for all kids, along with Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Wardens providing hunter safety, Mike Hudman with Black Water Retrievers with a dog demo and a free hot dog meal. All kids’ ages up to 17 are invited to attend. Mark your calendar for June 6, the Shelby County Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Event. 5K Fun Run & Walk:

 

Texas A&M Agrilife Extension along with Nacogdoches Medical Center and Brookshire Brothers are sponsoring the Shelby County Fit 5K Fun Run & Walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 18. Entry fee is 5 cans of non-perishable food items, and the event is open to all ages-and you do not have to be a member of the Step Up Scale Down program. The non-perishable food items go to Shelby County Outreach Ministries. The event begins at Center Park Pond Pavilion behind the baseball fields. For more information, call 936-598-7744. A free refillable water bottle toes to the first 15 participants to sign-in at the event.

 

Golf tournament:

The East Texas Peace Officers’ Association Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, April 18 at Woodland Hills Golf Course in Nacogdoches. The format is a 4-man scramble with a start time of 1:30 p.m. Cost is $300 per team, which includes door prizes, range balls and lunch. All proceeds go towards the training conference for peace officers in East Texas, which will be held in Center in June. To register, contact Mike Claude at mrclaude50@gmail.com.

 

Car Show:

 

The City of San Augustine Main Street would like to invite you to enter the antique and muscle car show during the Heritage Festival on May 2. The chairs Billy Johnson and daughter Brittney Johnson are in charge of the event. It will take place Saturday May 2. Call to reserve your place, 936-201-9798 or 936-275-3172. Come out and enjoy the good food, farmers market, heritage demonstrations, information booths, arts and crafts vendors, shopping, educational presentations, storytelling, live entertainment and downtown walking tours.

 

Joaquin Athletic Boosters:

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Fundraiser $10,000 raffle will be held Monday, May 11 in conjunction with the high school athletic banquet. The tickets are $100 each for the drawing, with only 250 tickets sold. The drawing goes as follows: 1st ticket drawn-$5,000, 2nd-6th tickets-$1,000 each. A total of $10,000 will be given away. There will not be a meal included with the drawing. If you would like to attend the athletic banquet as well, tickets for the meal will be on sell at the high school office at a later date. Tickets can be purchased from any Joaquin Athletic Booster member or the administration office.

 

Take a Kid Fishing:

 

The 37th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Anglers’ Take a Kid Fishing Bream Tournament will be held on Toledo Bend at Huxley Bay Marina on Saturday, May 9. We invite all children ages 3 to 15 years old to register for the free tournament. Entry forms can be picked up at the Center Broadcasting studios at 307 San Augustine Street in Center, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery & Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center.   Participants must be preregistered no later than May 1st.  Trophies will be awarded to each group and prizes will be available for each participant.  Fishing begins at 6am, and all participants must be in the weigh-in line no later than 12:30pm.
