Local Sports Round up 04/14/15; Pep rally to send Riders off to state soccer tourney at 3 p.m.

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughriders will play Liberty Hill in a Class 4A State Semi-final game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Georgetown High School. Another east Texas team, Kilgore will take on San Elizario in the earlier semifinal at 4 p.m. The 4A state championship game will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Georgetown. There will be a pep rally at 3 p.m. today at Center High School.

 

East Texas is represented pretty well at the state soccer tournament. In addition to Center and Kilgore, Lufkin is in the 5A tourney, while the Jasper Lady Bulldogs are in the girls’4A state tournament.

According to Center head coach Leon Dykes, Center Tennis competed in the District Tournament at Center ISD on April 6 the program as a whole won the overall Varsity and JV boys and girls district championship in a landslide. Henderson was second and Tatum came in third, Carthage placed fourth and Rusk was fifth in varsity points. All 1st and 2nd place finishers advance to the Region III championship on April 20-21 @ Bryan HS. Center will advance 14 players, Henderson 2 players.

Baseball

 

In the Txhighschoolbaseball.com state rankings out Monday the Carthage Bulldogs leaped over the Center Roughriders in the 4A poll. Carthage (10-7) is now No. 17, while Center (11-3-1) is No. 18 after the Bulldogs defeated the Riders last week. Hudson is No. 11, Athens No. 13 and Pleasant Grove is still on top. In Class 3A, Central Heights (15-1-1) remains the top team; in 2A, no change as Douglass (14-0) is No. 1, with Beckville No. 13, and the Dist. 24-2A trio of West Sabine No. 18, Colmesneil No. 19 and Broaddus No. 22. Up in 5A, Hallsville is No. 6 and Lufkin No. 13.

 

The Center Roughriders are coming off a bye last Friday and will be back in Dist. 19-4A action at Rusk tonight. Center’s only loss in the first round of district came to the Eagles, 4-3 back on March 27. The Riders (5-2) are a game back of Carthage (6-1). Rusk and Tatum are tied for third at 3-4. Carthage goes to Tatum tonight. Action in Rusk begins with JV at 4:30 p.m.

 

The Joaquin Rams go to Gary tonight. Both teams are tied for third in Dist. 23-2A at 6-3. The outcome may likely affect the outcome of the district race.

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders (0-6) play host to the district leading and No. 5 state-ranked Carthage Lady Bulldogs. It’s Senior Night for the Lady Riders.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams (9-2) are third in the district standings and go to play a tough Alto team.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons (9-2) will be on the road to Chireno.

Track & Field:

 

Varsity and JV District meets for all area schools will be held this week.

 

The District 19-4A meet gets underway Wednesday in Tatum.

Regular format is as follows:

Day 1: All JV field and running events; Varsity field and pre-lims

Day 2: All Varsity Running Finals

 

The Dist. 10-2A meet will be Wednesday & Thursday in Beckville.

 

San Augustine will host its district meet Wednesday.

 

The Center Roughrider Special Olympics team will host their annual meet at Roughrider Stadium on Friday, April 17.

 

New Panola College Men’s Basketball Coach:

 

Panola College hired Grant McMillan as its new men’s head basketball coach Monday. McMillan comes to Panola from Northwest Florida State College where his team won the 2015 NJCAA National Basketball Championship with a 33-2 record. McMillan is from Van where he was point guard on the 2005 Texas 3A State Championship team.

 

High school bass fishing

 

Center High School bass anglers Jared Wiggins and Brett Clark placed 6th at the SETX Tournament held last Saturday, April 11. The Shelby County Junior Bass Anglers competed in the event. There were 351 boats registered. Wiggins and Clark won a scholarship and the win put them in 1st place in the SETX overall standings.

 

5K Fun Run & Walk:

 

Texas A&M Agrilife Extension along with Nacogdoches Medical Center and Brookshire Brothers are sponsoring the Shelby County Fit 5K Fun Run & Walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 18. Entry fee is 5 cans of non-perishable food items, and the event is open to all ages-and you do not have to be a member of the Step Up Scale Down program. The event begins at Center Park Pond Pavilion behind the baseball fields. For more information, call 936-598-7744. A free refillable water bottle toes to the first 15 participants to sign-in at the event.

 

Golf tournament:

The East Texas Peace Officers’ Association Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, April 18 at Woodland Hills Golf Course in Nacogdoches. The format is a 4-man scramble with a start time of 1:30 p.m. Cost is $300 per team, which includes door prizes, range balls and lunch. All proceeds go towards the training conference for peace officers in East Texas, which will be held in Center in June. To register, contact Mike Claude at mrclaude50@gmail.com.

 

Car Show:

 

The City of San Augustine Main Street would like to invite you to enter the antique and muscle car show during the Heritage Festival on May 2. The chairs Billy Johnson and daughter Brittney Johnson are in charge of the event. It will take place Saturday May 2. Call to reserve your place, 936-201-9798 or 936-275-3172. Joaquin Athletic Boosters:

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Fundraiser $10,000 raffle will be held Monday, May 11 in conjunction with the high school athletic banquet. The tickets are $100 each for the drawing, with only 250 tickets sold. The drawing goes as follows: 1st ticket drawn-$5,000, 2nd-6th tickets-$1,000 each. A total of $10,000 will be given away. There will not be a meal included with the drawing. If you would like to attend the athletic banquet as well, tickets for the meal will be on sell at the high school office at a later date. Tickets can be purchased from any Joaquin Athletic Booster member or the administration office.

 

 

 

Take a Kid Fishing:

 

The 37th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Anglers’ Take a Kid Fishing Bream Tournament will be held on Toledo Bend at Huxley Bay Marina on Saturday, May 9. We invite all children ages 3 to 15 years old to register for the free tournament. Entry forms can be picked up at the Center Broadcasting studios at 307 San Augustine Street in Center, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery & Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center.   Participants must be preregistered no later than May 1st.  Trophies will be awarded to each group and prizes will be available for each participant.  Fishing begins at 6am, and all participants must be in the weigh-in line no later than 12:30pm.
