Local Sports Round up 04/13/15; Regional golf tournaments start today

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughriders will play Liberty Hill in a Class 4A State Semi-final game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Georgetown High School. Another east Texas team, Kilgore will take on San Elizario in the earlier semifinal at 4 p.m. The 4A state championship game will be Friday afternoon in Georgetown. Center defeated Houston Furr, 1-0 in Friday’s regional semi-final and got revenge on district rival Palestine, 2-0 in Saturday’s region final. Palestine had defeated the Riders on three previous occasions this season, including twice during district.

 

East Texas is represented pretty well at the state soccer tournament. In addition to Center and Kilgore, Lufkin is in the 5A tourney, while the Jasper Lady Bulldogs are in the girls’4A state tournament.

Baseball

 

Coming off a bye Friday, the Center Roughriders will resume Dist. 19-4A play Tuesday night when they go to Rusk. Center (5-2) is a game back of first-place Carthage (6-1) in the standings. Rusk and Tatum are tied for third at 3-4, while Henderson is 1-7. Last Friday Carthage beat Rusk, 10-4 and Tatum beat Henderson, 3-2.

 

The top 4 teams will advance to the playoffs.

 

Friday’s results:

 

No changes in the Dist. 23-2A standings after last weekend’s action. First-place, state-ranked and undefeated Beckville (9-0) gets a 10-1 win over the Shelbyville Dragons (3-6). The Timpson Bears (7-2) hold onto second place with a 21-14 shoot-out win over the Tenaha Tigers (3-7). The Joaquin Rams beat the Martinsville Pirates, 11-4 and Gary over Mt. Enterprise, 8-0, as they’re both 6-3 tied for third place. Martinsville is 2-7 and Mt. Enterprise 1-8.

 

In Dist. 24-2A, it’s still dominated by three state-ranked teams, as West Sabine is 11-0, having a bye over the weekend. On Friday, the Broaddus Bulldogs beat Brookeland, 4-3 to hang onto second place at 10-1. Colmesneil (9-1) also had a district bye Friday. Zavalla (8-4) beats Chireno (0-10), 9-5. Meanwhile, the San Augustine Wolves (4-8) beat Burkeville (0-11), 13-2.

 

The top three teams are playoff bound in Class 2A.

 

In Dist. 22-3A, the Garrison Bulldogs beat Central, 2-1, and Woden took a 17-1 win over Newton as both teams remain tied for second at 6-3, three-games back of first-place and top-ranked Central Heights. The Blue Devils are 9-0 after a 3-1 win over Woodville (5-4) Friday. Hemphill (5-4) beat Corrigan (1-8) 10-0. Central is 4-5 and Newton 0-9.

 

Class 3A has four teams advance to the state playoffs.

The Center Lady Riders (0-6) lose to Henderson (3-3), 3-4 Friday.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams (9-2) hold onto third-place in the district race after a 15-0 win over Douglass Friday. Alto and Cushing are battling it out for first.

 

Alto gets a 19-3 win over the Timpson Lady Bears (4-7).

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons (9-2) take a 10-1 win over the Martinsville Lady Pirates to remain in the playoff hunt. Shelbyville was in third place heading into action over the weekend behind West Sabine in second and Zavalla in first place.

Track & Field:

 

Varsity and JV District meets for all area schools will be held this week.

 

The Center Roughrider Special Olympics team will host their annual meet at Roughrider Stadium on Thursday, April 16.

 

College bowling:

 

Stephen F. Austin’s run at a national championship came up two games short as the Ladyjacks finish second at the 2015 NCAA Bowling Championship in Richmond Heights, Missouri Saturday. SFA fell 4-2 in the championship match, closing out he season as the national runners-up.

 

5K Fun Run & Walk:

 

Texas A&M Agrilife Extension along with Nacogdoches Medical Center and Brookshire Brothers are sponsoring the Shelby County Fit 5K Fun Run & Walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 18. Entry fee is 5 cans of non-perishable food items, and the event is open to all ages-and you do not have to be a member of the Step Up Scale Down program. The event begins at Center Park Pond Pavilion behind the baseball fields. For more information, call 936-598-7744. A free refillable water bottle toes to the first 15 participants to sign-in at the event.

 

Golf tournament:

The East Texas Peace Officers’ Association Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, April 18 at Woodland Hills Golf Course in Nacogdoches. The format is a 4-man scramble with a start time of 1:30 p.m. Cost is $300 per team, which includes door prizes, range balls and lunch. All proceeds go towards the training conference for peace officers in East Texas, which will be held in Center in June. To register, contact Mike Claude at mrclaude50@gmail.com.

 

Car Show:

 

The City of San Augustine Main Street would like to invite you to enter the antique and muscle car show during the Heritage Festival on May 2. The chairs Billy Johnson and daughter Brittney Johnson are in charge of the event. It will take place Saturday May 2. Call to reserve your place, 936-201-9798 or 936-275-3172. Come out and enjoy the good food, farmers market, heritage demonstrations, information booths, arts and crafts vendors, shopping, educational presentations, storytelling, live entertainment and downtown walking tours.

 

Joaquin Athletic Boosters:

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Fundraiser $10,000 raffle will be held Monday, May 11 in conjunction with the high school athletic banquet. The tickets are $100 each for the drawing, with only 250 tickets sold. The drawing goes as follows: 1st ticket drawn-$5,000, 2nd-6th tickets-$1,000 each. A total of $10,000 will be given away. There will not be a meal included with the drawing. If you would like to attend the athletic banquet as well, tickets for the meal will be on sell at the high school office at a later date. Tickets can be purchased from any Joaquin Athletic Booster member or the administration office.

 

Take a Kid Fishing:

 

The 37th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Anglers’ Take a Kid Fishing Bream Tournament will be held on Toledo Bend at Huxley Bay Marina on Saturday, May 9. We invite all children ages 3 to 15 years old to register for the free tournament. Entry forms can be picked up at the Center Broadcasting studios at 307 San Augustine Street in Center, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery & Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center.   Participants must be preregistered no later than May 1st.  Trophies will be awarded to each group and prizes will be available for each participant.  Fishing begins at 6am, and all participants must be in the weigh-in line no later than 12:30pm.
