History making season continues for Roughrider Soccer team, in state semifinal Wednesday

The Center Roughrider Soccer teams’ history making season continues as they’ll be playing in the Class 4A State Semifinals in Georgetown Wednesday.

The Riders took a 2-0 win over district rival Palestine at the Region III Final in College Station Saturday.

James Greer caught up with Rider head coach Roque Palomino following the game and he said getting to state is every coach’s dream. He added he didn't think having a chance to play for a state championship would come so soon with a team of underclassmen.

Coach Palomino said you can expect to see a good Rider Soccer program for at least a few more years.

Scoring both Rider goals Saturday was freshman Marcos Lopez who’s also led the team in scoring this season. He said it was an amazing feeling to go to state his freshman year and hope they have a chance to play for the championship on Friday.

The Rider Soccer program got it’s first-ever playoff win a couple of weeks ago. The team had lost on three previous occasions to Palestine this season, including twice during district.

It’ll be the Riders (20-3-1) vs. Liberty Hill (21-5) in the state semi-final at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for a chance to play the winner of the 4 p.m. semi between Kilgore (25-3-1) and San Elizario (16-4-3) in Friday’s state championship game at Georgetown High School.
