There are two bills in the Texas state legislature that is looking to require recycling yards to pay its customers with a check instead of cash.
Sen. Robert Nichols says he’s not had one single person to call and say they support the bill. On the other hand, he said he’s receive a lot of calls from people in Senate Dist. 3 that are not in favor of the bill.
The Jacksonville Republican said he feels Senate Bill 437 would burden people who depend on a little extra income by cashing in cans and metal.
Scrap metal yards are already faced with a number of state regulated laws, such as registering a person’s state ID and recording every transaction on video surveillance. Plus, possibly making someone wait 30 days for a check is not good.
Nichols says he believes the current laws on the book to help cut-down on metal theft are doing their job. Senate Bill 437 is now set for committee.
