Local Sports Round up 04/07/15; Rider golf & tennis headed to region, key baseball match-ups scheduled tonight

Golf:

 

The Center Roughrider & Lady Rider golf teams are headed to the regional tournament after placing second in their respective divisions at the Dist. 19-4A Tournament in Longview at Wood Hollow Golf Club Monday.

 

As a team, the Riders had a team score of 678, a stroke better than third-place Rusk’s 679. Center was led by Beau Buster Byrnes’ (77+75) 152, Austin Craig’s (81+80) 161, Zack Ritter with (90+91) 181, Rex Kirkley with a (88+96) 184, and Tyler Morris with a two-day total of (109+113) 222. Carthage took first place with a team score of 631, and also the top-two medalist each with a 146. Beau Buster Byrnes missed third medalist by four strokes. Center was in third place after last week’s opening round.

 

In girls’ play, the Lady Riders had a two-day score of 875, with Carthage placing first with a 770 and top-two individual medalist. The Lady Riders were led by Madison Agnew with a (94+96) 190, Callie Johnson 102+102) 204, Kalley Agnew (109+108) 217, Haley Price (147+126) 273, and Brittney Gilchrist (138+141) 279. The girls’ top three medalist had a 167 and 178 and 184.

 

The Class 4A Region III Golf Tournament is next week in Huntsville.

 

Tennis:

 

It was a clean sweep by the Center Roughrider tennis during the Dist. 19-4A Tennis Tournament Monday. The Rider Varsity Boys & Girls, along with JV Boys and Girls came away with championships. Varsity regional qualifiers will compete in Bryan April 20 & 21. We’ll have results as they become available.

 

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughrider Soccer team will play Little Cypress-Mauriceville in a Class 4A Region Quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. tonight in Silsbee. The winner advances to the region semi-final round at 5 p.m. Friday in College Station against the Furr-Royal winner.

 

Track & Field:

 

The Dist. 19-4A Jr. High Track & Field Meet continues today with the boys' division at 4:30 p.m. in Rusk.

 

Basketball All Academic Team:

 

Shelbyville Lady Dragon Sr. Caleigh Sparks was recently named to the Region 3 District 22 2A All Academic Team.

 

Baseball

 

The Txhighschoolbaseball.com state rankings are out and the Center Roughriders have jumped up to No. 15 this week in the Class 4A poll. The 11-2-1 Riders are joined by district foe, Carthage at No. 20 at 8-7, and Jasper is No. 21. Hudson is No. 13, and despite losing to Carthage last week, Pleasant Grove remains No. 1. In Class 3A, there’s a new No. 1 as Central Heights now holds the top spot at 12-1-1, and White Oak is No. 21. In Class 2A, Douglass remains No. 1 at 13-0, Harleton is No. 10, undefeated Beckville is No. 13, mean while, three Dist. 24-2A teams are in the top 25. West Sabine No. 19, Colmesneil No. 20, and Broaddus is No. 24. In 5A, Hallsville is No. 6 and Lufkin No. 13.

 

Today's schedule:

 

The first place and state-ranked Center Roughriders (5-1) go to state-ranked Carthage to play the Carthage Bulldogs (4-1) for the second of three meetings during Dist. 19-4A play. The Riders grabbed a 6-5 walk-off come-from-behind win a couple of weeks ago in Center. Action begins with JV at 4:30 p.m.

 

Another game today with playoff implications will be the Timpson Bears at the Shelbyville Dragons. Timpson is tied with Gary at 5-2 in second place, while Shelbyville is in fourth place at 3-4. The Bears took a 5-4 win on March 16. Today starts the second go-round of district play. First-pitch is 6:30 p.m.

New AD/head football coach

 

Dist. 19-4A football participant, Spring Hill, has a new AD/head football coach as Kelly Mercer was introduced by the Spring Hill ISD Monday. He comes to Spring Hill from Class 6A Plano West where he served as offensive coordinator. He replaces Mark Sartain, who resigned after two seasons. Mercer will be Spring Hill’s fourth different head coach in five seasons. Spring Hill has not made the state playoffs since 2007. The Dist. 19-4A football district includes: Atlanta, Center, Gladewater, Pleasant Grove, Tatum and Spring Hill.

 

Car Show:

 

The City of San Augustine Main Street would like to invite you to enter the antique and muscle car show during the Heritage Festival on May 2. The chairs Billy Johnson and daughter Brittney Johnson are in charge of the event. It will take place Saturday May 2. Call to reserve your place, 936-201-9798 or 936-275-3172. Come out and enjoy the good food, farmers market, heritage demonstrations, information booths, arts and crafts vendors, shopping, educational presentations, storytelling, live entertainment and downtown walking tours.

 

Joaquin Athletic Boosters:

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Fundraiser $10,000 raffle will be held Monday, May 11 in conjunction with the high school athletic banquet. The tickets are $100 each for the drawing, with only 250 tickets sold. The drawing goes as follows: 1st ticket drawn-$5,000, 2nd-6th tickets-$1,000 each. A total of $10,000 will be given away. There will not be a meal included with the drawing. If you would like to attend the athletic banquet as well, tickets for the meal will be on sell at the high school office at a later date. Tickets can be purchased from any Joaquin Athletic Booster member or the administration office.
