Local Sports Round Up 04/03/15; Rider soccer wins again, baseball blanks Henderson, golf team chases regional berth

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughrider Soccer team’s historic season continues as they take a 3-1 win over Hardin-Jefferson in a Class 4A area championship game in Bryan yesterday. Center soccer now advances to play Little Cypress-Mauriceville in the region quarterfinals. LC-M took a 3-1 win over Waco LeVega yesterday. The details are being finalized for Rider soccer’s next game.

 

Dist. Golf

 

After the first round of the Dist. 19-4A golf tournament in Longview Thursday, the Center Riders are in third place as a team, with two members in fourth and fifth individually. Beau Buster Byrnes is fourth with an opening round 77, while Austin Craig had an 81 for fifth place. Rex Kirkley shot an 88. Second round will be played Monday in Longview.

 

Track & Field:

 

The Timpson Bears take second in the Huntington meet Thursday.

 

The Dist. 19-4A Jr. High Track & Field Meet will Monday and Tuesday (April 6 & 7) starting at 4:30 p.m. in Rusk. The girls' meet will be Monday with the boys' jr. meet the following day.

 

 

Baseball

 

Today's Schedule:

 

The Center Roughriders (5-1) get a 12-0 shutout win at Henderson last night in Dist. 19-4A, as Kam Owens get the win on the mound. The Riders will go to Carthage Tuesday in a battle of two state-ranked teams.  Center is a half-game up on the Bulldogs (4-1). Carthage got a big win last night as they beat the state’s No. 1 ranked team Pleasant Grove, 5-1 in a non-district game.

 

The Rider JV takes an 8-7 win over Henderson.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs (3-3) go to Newton (0-6)

 

The Broaddus Bulldogs (7-1) at Chester (6-3)

 

Today’s schedule:

 

The Timpson Bears (5-1) are home against state-ranked and district-leading Beckville (6-0) in an 11 a.m. start.

 

Tenaha (1-5) at Joaquin (3-3) 11 a.m.

 

Shelbyville (3-3) at Gary (4-2)

 

The San Augustine Wolves (3-5) will host district front-runner West Sabine (8-0) at 11 a.m.

The Center Lady Riders are 0-4 after Rusk (3-1) gets a 12-2 win yesterday. Center is scheduled to be home against Tatum Tuesday.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons (7-2) beat Brookland, 13-3 in six innings.

 

The Timpson Lady Bears (3-6) have put together a three-game win streak after sweeping Mt. Enterprise in a double-header. Timpson took the first game, 18-3 and the second, 10-5.

Team Tennis:

 

The Center team will be in the district tournament Monday & Tuesday.

Car Show:

 

The City of San Augustine Main Street would like to invite you to enter the antique and muscle car show during the Heritage Festival on May 2. The chairs Billy Johnson and daughter Brittney Johnson are in charge of the event. It will take place Saturday May 2. Call to reserve your place, 936-201-9798 or 936-275-3172. Come out and enjoy the good food, farmers market, heritage demonstrations, information booths, arts and crafts vendors, shopping, educational presentations, storytelling, live entertainment and downtown walking tours.

 

Joaquin Athletic Boosters:

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Fundraiser $10,000 raffle will be held Monday, May 11 in conjunction with the high school athletic banquet. The tickets are $100 each for the drawing, with only 250 tickets sold. The drawing goes as follows: 1st ticket drawn-$5,000, 2nd-6th tickets-$1,000 each. A total of $10,000 will be given away. There will not be a meal included with the drawing. If you would like to attend the athletic banquet as well, tickets for the meal will be on sell at the high school office at a later date. Tickets can be purchased from any Joaquin Athletic Booster member or the administration office.
