Mansfield police chief enters race for DeSoto Parish sheriff

Longtime DeSoto Parish Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle will have his position challenged in the fall.

Yesterday, Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs became the first candidate to enter the field against the four-term sheriff in the October election.

Hobbs is a 26-year law enforcement veteran and was appointed Mansfield Chief of Police in 2013.

Hobbs cited several purchases made under Arbuckles administration as questionable; these include a helicopter for almost $300,000 that he says is not in the air often, and construction of a $2 million maintenance facility.

Arbuckle has said he's running, but has made no formal announcement.
