Local Sports Round up 02/11/15; Riders sweep Rusk, 22-2A girls' race ends in three-way tie for second

In Sports,

High School Basketball Last Night:

The Center Roughriders get a three-game sweep in Rusk, with the Varsity Riders winning, 70-57 to improve to 5-1 in Dist. 19-4A. Meanwhile, the JV comes away with a 49-46 win, and 9th grade Riders take a 55-24 victory. The Varsity remains a game back of first-place Tatum (6-0), a 62-56 winner over third-pace Carthage (3-4). The Riders have two district games remaining, including a head-on match at Tatum Friday.

The Center Lady Riders end with a 21-37 loss. The JV Lady Riders win, 25-24.

The Dist. 22-2A boys’ race is winding down, with three Shelby County teams leading the pack. The first-place Shelbyville Dragons improve to 7-1 with a 52-44 win last night over the Martinsville Pirates (4-4). The Timpson Bears (6-2) are a game back of the Dragons as they beat the Joaquin Rams (1-7), 65-50, and the Tenaha Tigers (5-3) take over sole-possession of third-place by beating Beckville (1-7), 74-37. The key game in the district Friday is Timpson at Tenaha.

There’s a 3-way pile up for second and third place in the Dist. 22-2A girls’ race as the regular season ended last night with Shelbyville, Joaquin and Martinsville with 6-4 records. The Lady Dragons beat Martinsville, and Joaquin defeated Timpson, 63-30 with Annabeth Vaughn knocking down 32 points. District rule says there will be a “play-in”to determine the second and third place teams in the playoffs. Coaches are meeting today to iron-out the details. We understand there will be a coin-flip with the odd man in, and the evens play an elimination game, with the remaining two teams to play a “seed” game.

The Tenaha Lady Tigers took the championship last week, and finish 10-0. They have a first-round bye in post-season. The Lady Tigers will play the District 16-2A Champion Union Grove Lady Lions in a playoff warm-up on Saturday at 1:30PM at Arp HS

In Dist. 23-2A, the San Augustine Wolves beat Zavalla, 91-37, and West Sabine over Brookeland, 58-56, as the two remain tied for first at 7-1. Broaddus beat Pineywoods, 73-69. The fight for third-place has Brookeland and Broaddus at 4-4. Brookeland goes to SA Friday.

The San Augustine Lady Wolves have taken second in Dist. 23-2A, beating Zavalla, 49-37.  The Broaddus Lady Bulldogs are district champs. San Augustine will meet either Colmesneil or Big Sandy in a bi-district game early next week.

Newton continues to dominate Dist. 22-3A, beating Hemphill, 87-42 to improve to 11-1. Central Heights (9-3) is two games back with a 64-47 win over Central (5-7).

In girls’ action, the Garrison Lady Bulldogs beat Corrigan, 44-33, and will play Crockett at 8 p.m. Monday at Angelina College in Lufkin in a bi-district playoff game.
