In Sports,

High School Basketball Tonight:

The Center Roughriders are idle tonight and are in second place in Dist. 19-4A at 4-1, a half-game back of 4-0 Tatum. Coming up in the district tonight is Tatum at 1-4 Henderson and 1-4 Rusk at third-place Carthage, who’s 2-3. The Riders will be at Rusk next Tuesday.

The Lady Riders will close out their season at Rusk next Tuesday.

In Dist. 22-2A tonight, it’s the first-place Shelbyville Dragon (5-1) at the Joaquin, Rams (1-5). A game back in the standings are the Tenaha Tigers and Timpson Bears at 4-2. Tenaha goes to Martinsville and Timpson will travel to Beckville (1-5). Meanwhile, the Martinsville Pirates are 3-3. The remaining three games on the schedule favor Tenaha, with Timpson and Martinsville battling it out for the third and final playoff spot down the stretch.

The girls’ Dist. 22-2A standings for the playoffs are pretty well set heading into the final two games. With the Tenaha Lady Tigers unbeaten (8-0) and having a share of a district championship, and the Martinsville Lady Pirates alone in second at 6-2, the fight for third comes down to Friday night as the Shelbyville Dragons (5-3) will be in Joaquin (4-4) to play the Lady Rams.

In Dist. 23-2A, the final four games will be interesting. San Augustine and West Sabine are tied for the lead at 5-1, with Broaddus and Brookeland two games back at 3-3. The Feb. 17 match-up with West Sabine at San Augustine could be for the championship. However, on any given night, things can take a turn in this district. Friday’s schedule has San Augustine at Pineywoods (2-4), Broaddus at West Sabine and Brookeland at Zavalla (0-6).

In Dist. 22-3A, there’s a big head-on game Friday has second-place Central Heights (8-2) at first-place Newton (9-1). Meanwhile, Woodville is tied with Central Heights at 8-2 and goes to Corrigan (2-7), Garrison (1-8) at (4-6) Central, and Hemphill (1-8) at Woden (5-4).
