Center firemen respond to residential fire off Hwy. 7 East Wednesday, minimal damage reported

The Center Fire Dept. was called to a residential fire off Hwy. 7 east near Flat Fork Creek Wednesday afternoon and arrived to find a fireplace had overheated and caught a rafter in the attic on fire.

Center Fire Chief Keith Byndom told us the call went out at 2:45 p.m. to the Garris Powell home on County Road 3156.

Chief Byndom said there was no major damage from the fire, nor from the water used to extinguish the small blaze.

He noted fireman had to pull tin from the roof to access the attic and also remove some of the interior ceiling to reach the burning rafter.

Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative was also called to disconnect power from the residence since the fire involved an electrical service line.
