Local Sports Round up 02/05/15; SA's Jamikel Roberts signs with Texas A&M-Commerce

National Signing Day:

 

Yesterday was National Signing Day and SFA Head Coach Clint Conque signed a large class of recruits that he said will help both his team’s immediate and future needs. The second-year Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football coach announced the signing of 20 high school players and seven transfers as part of his second recruiting class since becoming the head coach in December of 2013.

 

 

There was one local signing event yesterday as San Augustine stand-out QB JaMikel Roberts signed with Texas A&M-Commerce. Roberts will likely be a cornerback for the Lions.

 

Power Lifting:

 

Schedule for today, Center High School will be at the Huntington Invitational, while Shelbyville goes to Diboll, and Joaquin at Kirbyville.

 

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughriders are open Friday, while the Lady Riders host Tatum Friday.

 

The Tenaha Tiger and Lady Tiger Soccer teams will be at Carlisle this evening for two games starting at 7 p.m.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders will have a scrimmage against the Shelbyville Lady Dragons in Center at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

 

College Baseball:

 

Panola's Hector Morales went 2-4 with a home run, but the Panola Ponies fell to Weatherford 8-4, Tuesday. The Ponies will be in Mesquite to play Eastfield in a double-header Friday starting at 1 p.m., before returning home Saturday for two with Temple at 2 p.m.

College Hoops:

 

The SFA Ladyjacks head to Natchitoches to play Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. tonight. The SFA Lumberjacks are home to play Houston Baptist Saturday night, the second game of a double-header, with the Ladyjacks in the early game at 4 p.m. with Houston Baptist.

 

 

Sign Ups:

 

The Center ASA Softball League will have late sign-ups on this evening, Thursday, February 5, from 5:30-8 pm at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Pecan Street in Center. Any questions, call Feather at 936/332-6050.

 

Center Youth Baseball will be holding signups for the 2015 season February 6 & 13 from 5-7pm at the Center Middle School Cafeteria. If anyone has any questions or is interesting in coaching please call Jason Mitchell at (936)488-2863 or Melissa McGhen at (936)488-9034.

 

Joaquin Youth Sports will hold one last registration for the 2015 season of baseball/softball Saturday, February 7 from 9am -12pm at Joaquin High School Gym Entrance (THIS WILL BE THE FINAL DAY AND TIME TO SIGN UP) Registration will be $80 per child or $150 per household. Please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate with you to registration.

 

There will be a Wild Game Cook-off and Banquet held on Saturday, February 7 at the Windham Civic Center. The event is sponsored by local churches, and is free. Tickets are available at the office of First Baptist Church in Center. The cook-off judging will begin at 5p.m., and participants may cook on site or off. The banquet will be at 6pm. The keynote speaker will be Bobby Brasher, noted outdoorsman, high school football coach and executive director of Christian Hunters and Anglers. The San Augustine Lions Sporting Clay Shoot will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Fairway Farm, located five miles east of San Augustine on Hwy. 21. All proceeds benefit Texas Lions’ Camp, local charities and scholarships. The shoot will consist of four or five person teams. Individuals are welcome and everyone will be placed on a team. There will be one flight beginning at 10 a.m., registration starts at 8 a.m. Fee is $100 per shooter. Food, drinks and prizes will be provided. A special brass plated lever-action Henry rifle donated by T-Roy Broussard from the “Swamp People” TV show will be auctioned and another Henry rifle will be awarded to the “top shooter”.
