Local Sports Round up 02/03/15; Tenaha's Cobe Caraway named first team all-state, others receive honorable mention, Tenaha vs. Shelbyville in re-match tonight

Tenaha stand-out running back Cobe Caraway was named to the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 2A All-State Football first team, which was released Monday. Receiving Honorable Mention recognition were Tenaha receiver DeAndre Thomas and linebacker DaMarcus Perry, as well as San Augustine QB Jamikel Roberts, and Joaquin linebacker Adam Mason. All are seniors

 

High school basketball,

 

The Center Roughriders will start the second-round of Dist. 19-4A at home against Carthage today. The Riders are 3-1, Carthage is 2-2. Center beat Carthage at the buzzer, 50-48 on Jan. 16. Tatum is on top of the district standings at 4-0, and is idle this evening. Sub-varsity action starts at 5 p.m. It’s also Teacher Appreciation Night.

 

The Lady Riders play their final home game of the season tonight, and it’s Senior Night. Center is 0-6.

 

In Dist. 22-2A, big game in Tenaha tonight, as the Tigers host the Shelbyville Dragons. Shelbyville leads the district at 5-0. Shelbyville broke Tenaha's 61-game district winning streak Jan. 16, with a 49-45 win. Tenaha, Timpson and Martinsville are all 3-2 in second place. The Bears have lost back-to-back games and host Martinsville tonight. The Pirates opened district with a loss to the Bears, and bounced back to defeat Tenaha. Martinsville has won 3 of their last 4 games. Joaquin is winless in district and will be at 1-4 Beckville. The top 3 teams make the playoffs.

 

With the Tenaha Lady Tigers can take the outright 22-2A championship with a win at home against the Shelbyville Lady Dragons. Shelbyville and Martinsville are tied for second at 5-2, and the Joaquin Lady Rams are keeping their playoff hopes alive with three district games left, they're 3-4.  Joaquin goes to Beckville tonight, will hosts Shelbyville Friday and close out at Timpson. Beckville has one win, while Timpson is winless in district.

 

There's only two games in Tenaha tonight, varsity girls and varsity boys starting at 5 p.m. Tiger Cafe opens at 4:30 p.m.

 

In Dist. 23-2A, San Augustine and West Sabine are tied for the lead at 4-1, with Broaddus and Brookeland in second at 3-2. Tonight, Broaddus goes to San Augustine in the key matchup. The Wolves won the first-round meeting by 14.

 

In Dist. 22-3A, Newton is in the lead at 8-1, with Central Heights and Woodville at 7-2. Newton is at 1-7 Garrison tonight, and Hemphill at Central Heights.

College Hoops:

 

The Panola Ponies Basketball team lost to Navarro College, 69-79 Saturday in Carthage. Panola will be at Bossier Parish Community College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders will have the first of three pre-season scrimmages in Hemphill this evening. JV is set to start at 5 p.m. Center will be home to scrimmage the Shelbyville Lady Dragons Friday.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams go to Waskom at 4 p.m. today for a scrimmage.

 

Baseball:

 

The first baseball scrimmages start next week.

 

The Panola Ponies opened their season splitting a double-header last Saturday with Baton Rouge Community College at Jim Reeves Field in Carthage. Baton Rough took the first game, 14-6, with the Ponies coming back in Game 2 with a 10-3 win. Panola will be in Weatherford today.

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring the Border on the Bash Baseball Tournament March 5 thru March 7. High school teams from Texas and Louisiana will be playing and are guaranteed four games. Texas teams include Joaquin, Alto, Broaddus and Hemphill. Louisiana teams are Logansport, Mansfield, Stanley and Anacoco. Trophies will be presented to each state champion and trophies to over 1st, 2nd and 3ed place teams. The athletic boosters will offer meals. All games are being played at the Joaquin ISD field.

 

Golf:

 

The Center Roughrider Golf team participated in the Brook Hill Tournament at Emerald Bay Golf Course in Bullard Monday with the following results: Austin Craig shot an 80, Rex Kirkley a 91, Zack Ritter a 99, and Justin Renfro 100. The team did not place in the tourney.

 

Soccer:

 

We told you yesterday the Rider soccer team had won the New Summerfield Tournament last weekend. The Lady Rider soccer team also had a good three days of action as they took third place in girls’ play in the same tourney.

 

The Center Roughrider Soccer team is 9-2 on the season and along with the girls’ soccer team will be in Gladewater today.

 

The Tenaha Tiger and Lady Tiger Soccer teams will be at Carlisle Thursday for two games starting at 7 p.m.

 

Sign Ups:

 

The Center ASA Softball League will have late sign-ups on Thursday, February 5, from 5:30-8 pm at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Pecan Street in Center. Any questions, call Feather at 936/332-6050.

 

Center Youth Baseball will be holding signups for the 2015 season February 6 & 13 from 5-7pm at the Center Middle School Cafeteria. If anyone has any questions or is interesting in coaching please call Jason Mitchell at (936)488-2863 or Melissa McGhen at (936)488-9034.

Joaquin Youth Sports will hold registration for the 2015 season of baseball/softball on the following days: Tuesday, February 3 from 5:30pm- 7:30pm at Word of Faith Gym; and Saturday, February 7 from 9am -12pm at Joaquin High School Gym Entrance (THIS WILL BE THE FINAL DAY AND TIME TO SIGN UP) Registration will be $80 per child or $150 per household. Please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate with you to registration.

 

There will be a Wild Game Cook-off and Banquet held on Saturday, February 7 at the Windham Civic Center. The event is sponsored by local churches, and is free. Tickets are available at the office of First Baptist Church in Center. The cook-off judging will begin at 5p.m., and participants may cook on site or off. The banquet will be at 6pm. The keynote speaker will be Bobby Brasher, noted outdoorsman, high school football coach and executive director of Christian Hunters and Anglers. The San Augustine Lions Sporting Clay Shoot will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Fairway Farm, located five miles east of San Augustine on Hwy. 21. All proceeds benefit Texas Lions’ Camp, local charities and scholarships. The shoot will consist of four or five person teams. Individuals are welcome and everyone will be placed on a team. There will be one flight beginning at 10 a.m., registration starts at 8 a.m. Fee is $100 per shooter. Food, drinks and prizes will be provided.
