Today is final day to pay 2014 property taxes without penalty

We remind you that you have until the end of business today to pay your 2014 property taxes without penalty.

Since Jan. 31 fell on Saturday, Shelby County Tax-Assessor Debora Riley will accept your payment in person through today.

Her office in the Shelby County Courthouse is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Ms. Riley says property tax payments can be in the form of cash, check or credit card, but that will cost you a 2.5 percent service fee from the card company, or you can make payment electronically any time, day or night by going to www.certifiedpayments.net and enter the Shelby County code 1242857.

Keep in mind if you avoid paying your property taxes are making a payment, penalties will increase 2 percent per month until it reaches 18 percent by July 1, in addition to attorney fees.

For those that for some reason have forgotten to pay their property taxes, a second reminder is sent out in May.
