Local Sports Round up 02/02/15; Rider Soccer wins New Summerfield Tourney, Shelbyville Lady Dragons take power lifting meet

The Center Roughrider Soccer team won the New Summerfield Tournament over the weekend. Center defeated Tatum in the championship game, 9-1, and scored 21 goals, while allowing just 3 in three games played. That includes a 9-1 win over Crockett and 3-1 against New Summerfield. The Riders are 9-2 on the season and have outscored their opponents, 53-9. Center boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will be in Gladewater Tuesday.

 

Basketball:

 

The Center Roughrider got back into the win column with a 59-38 victory at Henderson. The Riders are 3-1, still a game back of first-place Tatum after they improve to 4-0 with a 75-46 win over 0-4 Rusk. Henderson drops to 1-3. Carthage was idle and is 2-2. Carthage will be in Center Tuesday. In sub-varsity action, the Rider JV and Freshmen also get wins. The JV, 41-31, and 9th grade, 46-27 over Henderson.

 

The Lady Riders lose to Henderson, 23-44, and are 0-6. The Lady Rider JV comes up short, 26-27.

 

In Dist. 22-2A, the Shelbyville Dragons remain undefeated with a 75-55 win over the Timpson Bears. The Dragons are 5-0, while the Bears drop to 3-2, now tied for second with the Tenaha Tigers who get their third-straight win, 77-36 over the Joaquin Rams, and Martinsville, who came away with a 40-25 win over Beckville. Joaquin falls to 0-5.  Shelbyville heads to Tenaha Tuesday night, as the Tigers attempt to get revenge for the Jan. 16 loss.

 

The Tenaha Lady Tigers grabbed a share of the Dist. 22-2A championship with a 41-30 win over the Joaquin Lady Rams. Tenaha improves to 7-0, and can take the outright title with a win over the Shelbyville Lady Dragons Tuesday. Shelbyville beat the Timpson Lady Bears, 65-23 Friday, and Martinsville defeated Beckville, as they’re both 5-2 in second. Joaquin drops to 3-4, and Timpson is 0-7.

 

The Dist. 23-2A race got more interesting Friday when the San Augustine Wolves beat West Sabine, 59-48 to move into a first-place tie with the Tigers at 4-1. Meanwhile, Broaddus beat Brookeland, 50-49, as there’s a tie between the two teams for second place at 3-2. Broaddus goes to San Augustine Tuesday.

 

In Dist. 23-3A, Central Heights over the Garrison Bulldogs, 77-35, as the Blue Devils are tied with Woodville in second at 7-2. Newton beat Woodville, 59-57, to take over first place at 8-1.

Power lifting:

 

The Shelbyville girls' power lifting team won the team title at the Huntington powerlifting meet last Thursday, January 29. Earning second place medals were Breanna Jackson and Kennedy Parker. First place medals went to Kaitlin Campbell, Cleosha Jeter, Hannah Hall, Kamaryn Smith, Katie Casey, and Harlie Hagler. Harlie Hagler also won the Best Lifter Award for the girls. The Dragon Lifters compete Thursday in Diboll. Gary Alford is Shelbyville girls’ power lifting coach.

 

The Shelbyville High School boys power lifting team also competed in the Huntington Meet with the following results: 1st place 242 class - Kal Metcalf - Best Lifter on the Heavy platform; 2nd place 198 class - Octavian Burrell; 2nd place 114 class - Christian Schilder; 3rd place 148 class - Corey Bearden; 4th place 220 class - SyDarius Evans; 5th place 242 class - Kawon McCowin. Michael B. Taylor is the Shelbyville boys’ power lifting coach.

 

 

College Hoops,

 

The SFA Lumberjacks make it 17 straight wins on the season with a 61-51 decision over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Meanwhile, the Ladyjacks defeat A&M-Corpus Christi, 64-55. The Ladyjacks will be at Northwestern State Thursday.

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring the Border on the Bash Baseball Tournament March 5 thru March 7. High school teams from Texas and Louisiana will be playing and are guaranteed four games. Texas teams include Joaquin, Alto, Broaddus and Hemphill. Louisiana teams are Logansport, Mansfield, Stanley and Anacoco. Trophies will be presented to each state champion and trophies to over 1st, 2nd and 3ed place teams. The athletic boosters will offer meals. All games are being played at the Joaquin ISD field.

Joaquin Youth Sports will hold registration for the 2015 season of baseball/softball on the following days: Tuesday, February 3 from 5:30pm- 7:30pm at Word of Faith Gym; and Saturday, February 7 from 9am -12pm at Joaquin High School Gym Entrance (THIS WILL BE THE FINAL DAY AND TIME TO SIGN UP) Registration will be $80 per child or $150 per household. Please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate with you to registration.

 

There will be a Wild Game Cook-off and Banquet held on Saturday, February 7 at the Windham Civic Center. The cook-off judging will begin at 5p.m., and participants may cook on site or off. The banquet will be at 6pm. The keynote speaker will be Bobby Brasher, noted outdoorsman, high school football coach and executive director of Christian Hunters and Anglers. The San Augustine Lions Sporting Clay Shoot will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Fairway Farm, located five miles east of San Augustine on Hwy. 21. All proceeds benefit Texas Lions’ Camp, local charities and scholarships. The shoot will consist of four or five person teams. Individuals are welcome and everyone will be placed on a team. There will be one flight beginning at 10 a.m., registration starts at 8 a.m. Fee is $100 per shooter. Food, drinks and prizes will be provided.
