TISD Resumes Classes for Spring Semester

Fresh with new attire that Santa Claus delivered over the
Holiday, the students of TISD returned to classes on Tuesday for the start of the 2nd semester of the 2014-15 school year.  Many varied activities await the student body such as district basketball, state robotics, baseball, track, spring band concert and sight reading, Tiger Fest, and of course, state mandated STAAR and EOC exams.  There is a lot to anticipate and the expectations remain high for our students.

Speaking of high expectations, let’s quickly reflect on the many
happenings of the first semester:

1)      The Roarin’ Band from Tiger land made the switch from military style
to corps and immediately returned to 1st Division form.

2)      Tiger Robotics registered 5 top 10 finishes at Region VII contest
including a 1st place finish at the high school division.

3)      Tenaha Elementary returned to UIL Academic competition.

4)      Tenaha Cross Country had record numbers of participation and
qualified for Regionals for the first time in school history

5)      THS Science classes built and operated their own boats on Lake
Murvaul

6)      And last but not least, Tiger Football…..

a.      Won its 6th straight District Title

b.      Won its 4th straight Region III Title (a school record)

c.       Advanced to the State Semi-Final Round for the 4th straight year.

Be sure to stay tuned to the TISD website for updates and calendars.  You
can also “keep up” on the Tenaha Independent School District Facebook page. And, of course, the Tiger Daily will remain “daily”.

Let’s get ready for another great semester at TISD!!!! The best there is!!!!

6th Holiday Hoops….. Another Great Event

Great basketball, big crowds, great food.  That was what patrons
to the 6th annual Holiday Hoops Scholarship classic enjoyed.  Another great tournament in Tenaha over the Holidays featured 40 teams, nearly 500 athletes, and a couple thousand fans over the three days of action.

For the 5th time in 6 years, the Kountze Lions claimed the boys’
title by downing Class 2A’s number one ranked Laneville Yellowjackets 81-55. The pace and effort that Coach Duane Joubert’s Lions play with is unmatched and Kountze looks poised to make a run at this year’s State Tournament in San Antonio.  The girls Championship game was an absolute classic.  Lipan’s Lady Indians held off first-time participant LaPoynor 53-52 in one of the great games ever at Holiday Hoops.  Lipan star Lanie Roberts claimed her second straight Holiday Hoops MVP award tallying 35 points in the Finals and battling foul trouble.

It won’t be long before plans begin being made for the 7th Annual Holiday Hoops.  A special thank you goes out to Joaquin ISD, Gary ISD, and Carthage ISD for allowing the use of their facilities.  The biggest
thank you of all goes to the 75 TISD employees and volunteers that make this event the best small school tournament in Texas.

2nd Semester Begins with Activity Filled Week

The Tiger Nation is jumping right in to the 2nd Semester. Several activities are on the slate for patrons to enjoy the hard work of
our students.  Last night, the Tiger and Lady Tigers both notched
non-district wins on the basketball court.  The Lady Tigers travelled to
Center and dominated the Shelby County rival Lady Roughriders 60-25.  At the Special Events Center, the Tiger boys’ lit up the scoreboard in defeating Cushing by 25 points.

While the Tigers were hooping it up, Tenaha soccer began its 6th
season last night with the first annual boys’ alumni game.  The young Tigers
were too much for the older, out of shape Tigers in winning 5-3.  Amazingly,
the participation rate for soccer has grown so much that there are enough
boys this year for a JV squad.  UNBELIEVABLE.  Don’t miss the Lady Tiger
season opener TONIGHT at Tiger Stadium at 5:15 against Carlisle.  Coach
Lauri Sisk is excited about this year’s team and she also has a record
number of participants.

It doesn’t end with soccer tonight.  Tomorrow night sees the
return of the Tiger Junior High Basketball teams to action in the Special
Events Center as they take on Beckville starting at 4:30 with the B-Team
Girls, followed by the B-Team Boys, A-Team Girls, and A-Team Boys.  Then on Friday, the Tiger Varsity boys travel to White Oak for non-district action, but, the big game is here at the SEC as Coach Davison and the Lady Tigers enter 22-2A District play with a 12-9 record against the rival Timpson Lady Bears.  The JV will start the action at 5:30.

COLLEGE “FREE MONEY” For the Early Bird…

That statement holds true for college-bound SENIORS that complete all
required paperwork turned in on time and show a NEED for Financial
Assistance from the government.  The website to visit is
<http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ All students have the
opportunity to complete a FAFSA: Free Application for Financial Student Aid to obtain “free $$$” for college.  This process should be completed by February in order to have an opportunity of getting a piece of the pie, free money.  The senior class will have an opportunity to request a PIN from the above website this month, which is a requirement for completing paperwork.

What do parents need to do to assist with this process?

ü  Parents must also go to the above site and request their own PIN, which takes 3-5 days.  The PIN Application is for students and parents who want to apply for a Federal Student Aid PIN.  Your PIN can be used each year to electronically apply for federal student aid and to access your Federal Student Aid records online. If you receive a PIN, you agree not to share it with anyone. Your PIN serves as your electronic signature and provides access to your personal records, so you should never give your PIN to anyone, including commercial services that offer to help you complete your FAFSA. Be sure to keep your PIN in a safe place.

ü  Request your W-2 form from work early in order to file taxes in January or early February.  This is an important part of the FAFSA filing process. Current tax information from the previous year has to be included on the form in order to qualify for funding.  The form can be completed with an “estimation” based on last  year’s information, but must be “adjusted” before submitting.  Again, without BOTH PINS, student and parent, the paperwork can NOT be sent.

ü  Should ALL students complete a FAFSA?  The answer is yes.  The formula is based on an EFC, which is Estimated Family Contribution.  Surprisingly, most students receive something, regardless of parental income.

More information will be forthcoming, but in order to be prepared, please
take the time to complete the above checklist to give your child the same
opportunity as others to get FREE money for college. DON’T DELAY, ACT TODAY!
