Local Sports Round up 01/02/15; Kountze, Lipan take championships at Tenaha Classic, Riders, Lady Riders in action today

The Tenaha ISD’s 6th annual Holiday Hoops Scholarship Classic came to an end Wednesday evening and organizers say the action was some of the best they’ve seen, the crowds were good and plans are underway for the next classic.

 

In the boys’ division, the final game saw the Class 3A #3 state-ranked Kountze Lions win their fifth championship trophy by beating Class 1A #2-state ranked Laneville, 83-55. In the girl’s championship game, it was Lipan over LaPoynor, 53-52.

 

In the boys’ third-place game it was Lapoynor 56, White Oak 43; fifth-place game saw Central Heights 75, Shelbyville 44; and Saltillo 68, Leggett 35 in the consolation final.

 

The Center Roughriders and Lady Riders will resume basketball action today. The Riders will be in Nacogdoches for trio of games starting with Freshmen at 1 p.m., followed by JV at 2:30 p.m. and then Varsity around 4 p.m.

 

There’s also been a change of site for the Lady Riders’ games with Jasper today.

The games will be in Jasper, not Center as originally scheduled. The JV Lady Riders will start at 3 p.m., with the Varsity to follow.

 

Also today, the San Augustine Lady Wolves will host Mt. Enterprise; the Joaquin Rams go to Groveton; the Tenaha Tigers host New Summerfield; and Douglass will be at Broaddus.

 

The SFA Ladyjacks will tip-off conference play at McNeese State at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Ladyjacks beat Southern Arkansas, 73-50 Wednesday.

 

The White-tailed Deer general hunting season will come to an end Sunday. There will be a Youth-only deer hunting period from Jan. 5 through Jan. 18. Also, a short Dove hunting season will end Wednesday, Jan. 7.
