He was born on November 29, 1962 in Center, Texas to Kenneth Maurice Wilburn and Katherine Vinie Sherrod Wilburn. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at West Hamilton Cemetery with Bro. Lamar Denby, Jr. officiating.

Jimmy Scates, 76, of Center, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018, at his residence.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2018, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Gordon Vaughn and Bro. Michael Brittain officiating.  A masonic service will follow under the direction of Newbern Masonic Lodge #97.  Interment will be at White Rock Cemetery in Center.


Mr. Scates was born March 3, 1942, in Center, to Harry D. Scates and Cecil Brittain Scates.  He served in the United States Army.  His hobbies included hunting and fishing with friends and family.  He also enjoyed teaching masonry. Mr. Scates was a Shriner and a member of Newbern Masonic Lodge #97 and Order of Eastern Star.  He was of the Baptist faith.


He is survived by children, Randy Scates and wife Tammy of Martinsville, Cindy Eubank and husband David of Center; grandchildren, Cassidy Scates, Ryan Scates, J.T. Scates, Michelle Scates, Kristy Barrett, Sara Duvall, J.W. Barrett; great grandchildren, Gavin Burrous, Jailei Scates, Ashton Furra, William Furra, Abbie Blanton, Joshawa Duvall, Emily Duvall, Bryce Sanders, Aiden Sanders, Mackenzie Barrett; brothers, Harry (Bubba) Scates and wife Mary of Center, Jerry Scates and wife Barbara of Center; special bonus son, David Wilson.


Preceded in death by wife, Betty Lavada Scates; parents, Harry D. Scates and Cecil Brittain Scates; sister, Shirley Arnold; grandson, Jonathan Burrous.

Mrs. Gray was born February 6, 1947, in Shelby County, to Herbert Lampley and Beatrice Cummins Lampley.  She was a retired nurse.  


She is survived by her husband, John Gray, of Tenaha; children, John Gray II and wife Carolyn of Joaquin, Jamie McHugh and husband Lee of Joaquin, Jeana Morrisey of Bonham; stepchildren, Jeana Morrissey and boyfriend Rick Hazelip of Bonham, Jeanette Cortes and husband Tim of Lake Kiowa; grandchildren, Cassie, Logan, Shelby, Lindsey, Katie, J.C., Zack, Tiffany; step grandchildren, Stephanie, Ben, A.J., Brittany, Jenniffer, Charlotte, Erica, Amanda, Davin, Brandyn, Christy, Kerry, Kyle; 4 great grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren and one on the way; brother, Larry Lampley of Tenaha; brother-in-law, Richard Gray and wife Patricia of Joaquin; sister-in-law, Theresa Underwood of Arlington; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, step nieces, step nephews, step cousins, other relatives and friends.

Franklin Blackwell

 

 

Franklin Blackwell, 77, of Nacogdoches, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2018, in Nacogdoches.

 

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 30, 2018, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Robert Strong and Bro. Buddy Strong officiating.  Interment will follow at Newburn Cemetery in Center.

 

Mr. Blackwell was born December 30, 1940, in Center, to Herbert Blackwell and Ione Smith Blackwell.  For many years, he worked as a contractor.  His hobbies included fishing, listening to gospel music, playing his guitar, and watching a good Dallas Cowboy football game.  Mr. Blackwell loved getting together with his family and friends and playing with his dog, Cody.  He was of the Baptist faith.

 

He is survived by his wife, Delois Blackwell of Nacogdoches; children, James Blackwell of Carthage, Delisa Carroll and husband Randy of Center; grandchildren, Justin Bernal of Denver, Colorado, Thomas Russell and wife Kim of Carthage, Trent Russell and wife Hailey of Martinsville; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Lexi, Lani, Zane, Kagen, Daxton; a host of other family and friends. 

 

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa King; parents, Herbert Blackwell and Ione Smith Blackwell; an infant brother.

 

Pallbearers will be James Blackwell, Thomas Russell, Randy Carroll, Trent Russell, Jimmy Welch, and Bobby Strong.  Honorary pallbearers will be Price Wilburn, Bobby Watson, Roger Steorz, Beamon Johnson and Sheila Wilkinson.

Ora Verdell Christopher, 71, of Nacogdoches, passed away Monday, December 24, 2018, at his residence.

 

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2018, at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Nacogdoches County with Bro. John Withem officiating.  Interment will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches County. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.

Mr. Christopher was born May 14, 1947, in Nacogdoches, to Ora Ford Christopher and Vera Mae Norton Christopher.  He worked as an auto mechanic.  Mr. Christopher loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Nacogdoches County.

 

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen Miller Christopher; children, Ronald Miller and wife Betty of Nacogdoches, Tresa Ady and husband Tony of Nacogdoches, Steve Christopher and wife Rhonda of Nacogdoches, Joey Christopher and wife Lindsay of Nacogdoches; son-in-law, Timothy Sherrod of New Caney; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

 

Preceded in death by children, Kim Sherrod of New Caney, Ora Verdell (Bubba) Christopher of Nacogdoches; parents, Ora Ford Christopher and Vera Mae Norton Christopher; brothers, Bobby Christopher, Tommy Christopher, Bill Christopher, Alan Christopher.

Jimmie Blanche Glenn of Houston, Texas, formerly of Center, passed away on December 23, 2018 in Houston. She was born in Center to Obie M. Glenn and Una Stephens Glenn. Mary Ann Adams, 78, of Center, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018, at her residence.

Mrs. Adams was born September 6, 1940, in Center, to Audra P. Livingston and Pauline Hendricks Livingston.  She was the owner and operator of Adams Salvage for several years. Mrs. Adams enjoyed working in her yard and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was a member of New Hope Congregational Methodist Church in Center. Mrs. Adams was past president of Ladies Auxiliary Post #8904.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jack Adams; children, Ronnie Harold Adams, Donnie Earl Adams and wife Lavaunda, Michael Wayne Adams and wife Liz, Deborah Annette Doyle and husband Don; grandchildren, Shane Adams and wife Mandy, Shade Adams, Wade Adams and wife Haley, Amanda Hassfurther and husband Eric, Michael Adams Jr., Jessie Adams and wife Kayla, Casey Adams, Brandon Anthony and wife Kelsey, Cody Anthony and wife Kaitlyn, Cameron Anthony; great grandchildren, Timmy Adams, Stevie Adams, Turner Adams, Emma Grace Adams, Lily Jane Adams, Charlotte Hassfurther, Caiden Adams, Greylon Anthony, Canyon Anthony, Kaizley Anthony, Harlen Anthony; brothers, Lyndon Livingston and wife Paula, Audra Livingston and wife Mary; sisters, Glenda Sue Stockle and husband Mark, Mary Lou Ford and husband Jack; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend, Myrlene Bradshaw; a host of other relatives and friends.

Attorney Gregory Charles Weatherly, 63, of Kingwood, TX, passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at Kingwood Medical Center in Kingwood, TX.


Funeral service for Attorney Weatherly will be on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Mt. Zion CME Church located at 921 Martin Luther King Dr, Center, TX 75935, with Rev. George Cartwright officiating. Visitation will take place on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Mt. Zion CME Church from 12 Noon to 1 PM.


Attorney Weatherly leaves to celebrate his life: his four children, Angela Renee Weatherly of Atlanta, GA, Brandon Charles Weatherly of Conyers, GA, Kristen Simone Weatherly of Washington, DC, and Joshua Abebe Weatherly of Houston, TX; and his grandchildren, Aniyah Weatherly of Atlanta, GA and McKenzie Rae Holman of Houston, TX.

Jose Gustavo Ruiz, 43, of Joaquin, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 in Joaquin. He was born on March 15, 1975 in El Jaral del Refugio Mexico to Jesus Ruiz and Ninfa Hernandez. Funeral mass will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 21, 2018 at St. Therese Catholic Church with Celebrant Father Jose Luis. Interment will follow at Restland Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel.


Jose Gustavo Ruiz was born in Mexico and came to Texas as a young boy at the age of 14.  He married the love of his life, Rocio Luna, in December 2008, and the two raised a beautiful family together.  Jose’s most precious moments were spent with his children.  Whether they were playing or feeding their animals together, they were what brought the greatest joy to his life. Jose was a diligent worker and enjoyed working outdoors. When he got the chance, he also liked to go hunting or fishing.  


Jose is survived by his wife, Rocio Luna Ruiz; mother, Ninfa Hernandez; sons, Santiago Ruiz, Salvador Ruiz; daughters, Rosalinda Ruiz, Leticia Ruiz, Valeria Ruiz, Juliet Ruiz; brothers, Jose Tovar and wife Maria, Jesus Ruiz and wife Yolanda; sisters, Maria Luz and Benito Uribe, Sara Rodriguez and husband Canuto, Francisca Morga and husband Pabo, Paula Novoa and husband Jesus, Aurora Guzman and husband Guadalupe, Rosa Luna and husband Juan, Purificasion Monroy and husband Alfredo; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends that will miss him dearly.


He is preceded in death by his father, Jesus Ruiz; and sister, Maria Monroy.

Los momentos mas preciados de José fueron al estar junto con sus hijos. Fuese jugando juntos o dándole de comer a sus animales, ellos eran lo que traían mayor felicidad a su vida. José fue un trabajador diligente, que le encantaba trabajar afuera. Cuando tenía la oportunidad, se iba de cacería o de pesca.

Charles R. (Chili) Jones, 80, of the Patroon Community of Shelby County, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. Jones was born February 11, 1938, in Tenaha, to William Jesse Jones and Willie Ruth Golden Jones.  He served in the United States Army and later worked as an insurance agent.  His hobbies included baseball and golf.  Mr. Jones was a member of Sam Houston Masonic Lodge #32 and served as a deacon at Patroon Baptist Church.

 

He is survived by wife of 57 years, Patsy Campbell Jones of Patroon; daughter, Charla Jones of Lufkin; sisters-in-law, Lucille Jones of Lufkin, Brownie Jo Minton of Waco; a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Jesse Jones and Willie Ruth Golden Jones; brother, Jesse (Sonny) Jones.

Mrs. Kay was born July 20, 1932, in Center, to John Cruse and Stella Tyler Cruse.  She worked in the poultry and cattle industry, USDA Sabine National Forest Seniors Program, and was also a homemaker.  Mrs. Kay was a member of Lydia Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Peavy was born December 17, 1933, to Bertis Edward Ansley and Lillie Mae Collins Ansley.  She was a member of McClelland Church.

He looked forward to meeting his daughter that was soon to be born. Tony will be dearly missed by his closest family and friends.
