Mary Evelyn Tyson Johnson

Mary Evelyn Tyson Johnson passed away on June 17th, 2018 at age 90, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Born in Timpson, Texas, to Gilmer and Mary Tyson, she grew up in the Waterman community of Center, Shelby County, Texas.  As all friends and family know, she met and married her beloved husband of 60 years, E.F "Foots" Johnson, also of Center, in their hometown.

Residing the majority of their life together in Dallas, Texas, they always returned to their farm in Waterman, every moment they could.  She liked to laugh and tell people that her address was Interstate 20 due to the endless hours of traveling between Dallas and Center.

Evelyn inherited her mother's artistic talent and gardening interests.  The latter led her to share these interests through study, teaching and volunteer work.  However, she expanded her interests in other areas too.  She had a passion to meet people and be involved with civic organizations.  This passion provided for many unique experiences and opportunities as well as lifelong friends; such as being invited to demonstrate the ‘Art of making Lye Soap,’ Pioneer style, at both the 1968 Texas Folklife Festival held by the Institute of Texan Cultures at the HemisFair, San Antonio, Texas, and the nation’s 1976 U.S Bicentennial Folklife Festival celebration at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.  She was a member of the Eastern Star, Mesquite Art Club, Mesquite Garden Club, East Texas Archeology Society, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Mesquite Citizens Police Academy, Shelby County Historical Society and Kappa Alpha Theta.  In addition, she authored her book of family heritage and tales called Memories, with a second in progress.  She was a member of the Old Home Missionary Baptsit Church in Shelby County.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband and two grandchildren.  She is survived by son Forrest Tyson Johnson and wife, Sharon of Center, daughter Melody Johnson Hayes of Nacogdoches, and daughter Shawn Johnson Burns and husband Alan of Dallas. Other survivors include her five grandchildren – Colby, Seth, Jarrod, Nathan & Shelby, and nine great-grandchildren.

A private family service was held where she joined E.F. by his side once again.  In lieu of flowers, her wish was for memorial donations to be sent respectfully to:

He was a family man, first and foremost. Judy was the center of his world and their marriage was the foundation we built our lives upon. All of his children and grandchildren knew that all they had to do was pick up the phone and he would show up, any time or anywhere. He tucked quarters into penny loafers just for that purpose. He made sure we all grew up camping and fishing. We caught an awful lot of fish on Toledo Bend for a boat full of loud children. Our childhoods were full of the memories built around those trips. He took two generations of kids up to Camp Albert Pike and, later, Lake Ouachita in Arkansas and wanted to make sure that the third generation would get a chance to go. He also managed to somehow make every kid feel like they were his favorite. We were all so confident in the fact that we were “it” that no one even thought to ask to make sure.

They say that how often and in what way you are remembered determines the type of person you were in life. There isn’t a porch swing sat on, a hook that hits the water, or the crunch of tires on a back road that happens without him being remembered. He was the cornerstone of our family and, as such, is so much a part of who we are that we remember him in everything we do. The most we can hope for is that someday we will leave behind the kind of legacy he has.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 5433 Westheimer Rd #300, Houston, TX 77056 or by visiting https://donate.lls.org/lls/donate.

Dana was born February 11, 1963, in Center, to George Fane Adams and Effie Bernice Warr Adams. She was most known for her loving and giving heart as she ministered to her community by lending a helping hand to anyone she met.  Her talents included mowing yards for the elderly, operating her bulldozer to assist neighbors with dirt work and tree removal, staying up and sitting nights with the sickly, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping and delivery for her neighbors who were shut-ins.  Dana was an avid gardener and followed the almanac to assure the most fruitful produce.  She was an excellent hunter, loved fishing and spending time on the Attoyac.  She processed her own sausage and wildlife meats.  Nothing went to waste.  Her little slice of peacefulness was her home place on Woodland Acres Lake.  Near and dear to her heart was ministering and nurturing children, nieces, nephews and friend’s children.  Gathering as many children as she could fit into a vehicle, she brought them to VBS to learn the love of Jesus.  Her special bundle of joy was her daughter, Hanna Fountain, and her granddaughter, Kali Fountain.  She will always hold a special place in our hearts. Dana was a member of VFW Post 8904 Ladies Auxiliary, West Shelby County VFD Ladies Auxiliary, and Mt. Herman Missionary Baptist Church.
