In Center, VFW Post 8904 & the Ladies Auxiliary will hold their annual Memorial Day Program on at 11 am in the Historic Courthouse on the Square in Center. Names of all Shelby County Veterans killed in action from the Civil War to today’s War on Terror will be read. Special honorees this year will be the nine County Vietnam Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial wreath will be decorated by members and citizens as the names are read. At the end of the program all will adjourn to the Veterans Memorial outside for the wreath laying, playing of Taps and raising of the flags.

In San Augustine, American Legion Post 387, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9313, and Historical Society will host the annual Memorial Day Observance on Monday in the Museum Theater and at the Courthouse Square. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the theater and will end with the raising of the US flag to full staff, recital of "In Flander's Fields,", the laying of wreaths at the monuments on the courthouse lawn to our war dead.

By the way, VFW Post 8904 Quartermaster Larry Hume tells us flags are to be flown at half-staff for Memorial Day.  They should be lowered to half-staff at sunrise on Monday, May 26th, and raised at noon the same day.  If you have a flag outside that cannot be lowered you can still show respect for the day by tying a black streamer of ribbon or cord at the top.
