Local Sports Round up 5/19/14

The Garrison Bulldogs have earned a spot into the Class 2A state baseball regional semi-finals by winning their best-of quarter-final series with Groveton in three games in Palestine. Garrison took Game 1, 11-1, lost Game 2, 9-6, before winning Game 3, 5-4. They’ll move on to play Troy this week in College Station, for a shot to advance to the region final. Game 1 of that series will be at 7:30 Friday at A&M Consolidated, with Game 2 at 4 p.m. Saturday.

 

Central Heights also moves on to the Class 2A region semi-final round after knocking off Kirbyville in three games in their quarter-final series. Central Heights won Game 1, 2-1, Kirbyville got the Game 2 win, 6-5, to force Saturday’s rubber game, which the Blue Devils won, 3-1 in Pollock. Central Heights will meet Salado this week.

 

In Class 1A, No. 1 state-ranked Douglass sweeps West Sabine, 11-1, 6-3 to advance to the region semi-finals to play Harleton.

 

The Carthage Bulldogs had their season end Saturday when Caldwell swept the Class 3A best-of-three series in Waxahachie. After taking a 15-1 win Thursday, Caldwell came back with a 5-3 decision Saturday. Caldwell moves on to play Silsbee in the region semi-finals this week.

 

In the softball playoffs:

 

The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Hudson Lady Hornets were sent home, as Huffman Hargrave swept the best-of-series, 4-3 and 11-1 in Hunstville. Hargrave advances to the region final to play Columbia.

 

In Class 1A, the state’s No. 1 team, Beckville will miss a return trip to Austin, as Harleton bounced the Lady Bearkats from postseason by taking Saturday’s third game, 3-1 in Marshall. Harleton will meet Grapeland for the region final. Grapeland defeated Zavalla to advance.

 

The Angelina College Lady Roadrunner softball team captured the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship in Saint George, Utah, Sunday defeating Central Florida, 8-5.

 

The Center Athletic Department has set this Wednesday as Physical Date. All 6th Graders, 8th Graders, and 10th Graders that plan to be in any Center Athletic Program in the 2014-2015 school year will need a physical. A reminder: any other students who are not in those grades, and who do not have a physical on file need to get a physical as well if they plan to be in athletics next year. The physical will cost $20. Checks will be accepted and must be made payable to Center Athletics.

 

The 61st annual Shelby County Sheriff’s Posse PRCA Rodeo is June 6 & 7 at 7:30 each night, sponsored by Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Presale tickets are $5, and can be purchased at Boles Feed, Triple J Feed and Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Center. Kids 6 and under get in free. There will be a calf scramble each night for kids 10 and under with cash prizes. On Saturday night only, anyone wearing a western hat will receive $1 off their admission ticket at the gate. Entertainment will be provided by three different East Texas Equestrian Drill Teams. The Rustlers, the 4-8 year olds; The Young Guns, the 8-14 year olds; and The Roughriders, age 15 & up.
