Former Shelby Regional Hospital Owner Pleads Guilty

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that former Shelby Regional Hospital owner, Dr. Tariq Mahmood, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud. The deal with prosecutors comes 13 months after Mahmood was indicted on that charge and additional counts involving allegations that he altered codes underlying $1.1 million in billings to Medicare. The charges carry a combined penalty of more than 20 years in prison, with eh conspiracy count alone bringing up to 10 years. It’s unknown if Mahmood has pleaded guilty to any other charges. A hearing on the deal has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in Tyler Federal Court. Mahmood’s former chief financial officer, Joe White of Cameron is also under indictment on identity theft in a related case. White is slated to go to trial this summer. White’s attorney has said he’s pursuing a deal with prosecutors, as well.
