Local Sports Round up 4/28/14; Riders to Play Jasper Tonight in Dist. Playoff

There’ll be a number of local athletes headed to the state track and field meet in Austin May 9 & 10 after qualifying at the regional event over the weekend. At the Class 1A, Region III Meet in Palestine, the San Augustine Lady Wolves captured the team championship trophy with 67 points, and the Shelbyville Lady Dragons were close behind in second with 62. The San Augustine Wolves were fourth in the boys’ team standings. The top-two finishers in each event qualify for the state meet.

 

San Augustine state qualifiers include: Tia Barnes in the girls’ shot put; Ky’Ashlyn Price in girls’ long jump and 200-meter dash; Anwar Davis in the boys’ 100-meter dash(1); the girls’ 400-meter relay(1) and the boys’ 800-meter relay.

 

Shelbyville state qualifiers are: Bailey Robalais in he girls’ discus(1); Mikel Carter in boys’ pole vault; Emma Walker in the 1600-meter run; and the girls’ 1600-meter relay(1).

 

Timpson state qualifiers include: Mack Hamilton in the boys’ 800-meter run; and the boys’ 800-meter relay(1).

At the Class 2A, Region III meet in Whitehouse, Garrison’s Jasia Berry is headed to state in the girls’ 110 hurdles; Willie Rogers in high jump; Taylor Webb in girls’ pole vaulting; and Lacy Lee in girls’ discus.

 

Weather permitting, the Center Roughriders will play a district playoff game against Jasper at 7:30 tonight at Jaycee Field where SFA plays in Nacogdoches, for the fourth playoff seeding in Dist. 20-3A. The winner will meet Rusk in bi-district this week. The Riders took a 6-0 win over Central Friday night to end the regular district season at 6-6, tied with Jasper. Dalton Horton threw a one-hitter and struck out 12 Central batters. Offensively, Josh Burns batted 2-for-3 for Center with a triple. Ross Mahan went 2-for-4 with a double and Taylor Tomlin was 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.


 Center and Jasper split the regular season meetings. Jasper took the first game, 5-2, with the Riders winning the second, 6-2. Tickets will be sold at the gate for tonight’s game, $5 Adult/ $3 student. Should there be a rain-out, the game will be played Tuesday, same location and time.

 

In the other district games Friday, Diboll clinched the third playoff spot outright when they beat second-place Hudson, 6-3. Carthage beat Huntington, 8-4. Carthage will open the playoffs Thursday in a best of series against Fairfield in Bullard.

 

The Joaquin Rams are playoff bound and took on Tatum Friday in a warm-up game, with Tatum taking a 5-4 win. The Rams are the third-place team from 21-1A, and will play the Alto/Kennard winner in a best-of-three bi-district series tentatively set to star Thursday in Woden.

 

Tenaha and Martinsville wound up their baseball seasons Friday. The Tigers lose to No. 1 state-ranked Douglass, 11-1, and Cushing takes a 15-0 win over Martinsville. Douglass and Cushing are headed to the playoffs as the first and second place teams respectively.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs will open the playoffs with a home-and-home series against Hemphill this week. Garrison will host Hemphill at 7 p.m. on Thursday before traveling to face them at 7 p.m. on Friday. If a third game is needed, it will at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hemphill.

 

The Broaddus Bulldogs are the third-place team from Dist. 23-1A. Their first-round opponent, plus site and date have not been set.

 

Softball Playoffs:

 

After winning their bi-district game last Thursday, the Shelbyville Lady Dragons will play Zavalla in an area round playoff game at 6:30 Thursday at Nacogdoches High School.

 

The Timpson Lady Bears were swept from the state playoffs Friday as Cushing takes a 7-0 win to win the best-of-three bi-district series. Cushing won Thursday’s first game, 9-3. Cushing advances to area to meet Evadale.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs are headed to the area round of the Class 2A softball playoffs after taking the best-of-three bi-district series against Hemphill in two games. Garrison beat Hemphill, 13-1, after an 18-3 win in Game 1. The Lady Bulldogs will meet Sabine in area this week, in a best-of-3 series. Sabine defeated Elysian Fields in bi-district.

 

 

Center boys' doubles tennis players Adam Reeves and Alec Lucas, along with Joaquin boys’ singles players Jimmy Smith are playing in the state tennis tournament today and Tuesday in College Station. Reeves/Lucas are in the 3A event, while Smith is taking part in the Class 1A tournament.

 

 

We're less than two weeks away from the 36th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Angler’s Take a Kid Fishing Tournament, on Saturday, May 10 at Huxley Bay Marina on Toledo Bend. Sign-ups are underway for the free event, which is for kids 3 to 15.
