San Augustine Man Injured When He Rear-Ends School Bus, Children OK

A Hemphill ISD school bus was involved in a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning, slightly injuring three children, and sending a San Augustine man to a Nacogdoches hospital with serious injuries.

Texas Department of Public Safety says around 7:20 yesterday morning, the bus driver, 39-year old Simon Mitchell Beauchamp was headed east on Hwy. 21 when it stopped to pick up some students. While stopped, the bus was struck from behind by a Chevrolet pickup, driven by 18-year old Roy Joseph Harris.

The report says Harris was pinned under the bus for a short period, and Beauchamp was not injured. The students were picked up by another bus and taken to school.

Harris was charged with failure to control speed.

It’s reported Harris was possibly distracted at the time of the crash due to taking his eyes off the road to retrieve an item he had dropped within the vehicle.
