Local Sports Round up 4/24/14; Shelbyville, Timpson & Garrison in Softball Playoffs

Shelbyville, Timpson and Garrison will enter the state softball playoffs tonight.

In Class 1A,

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons take on Carlisle at 6 this evening at Nacogdoches High School in a one-game bi-district playoff. The winner will face Zavalla in the area round next week.

The Timpson Lady Bears play Cushing in a best of 3-game bi-district series. Game 1 will be at 6 p.m. tonight at Central Heights’ field. The second game will be played at 3:30 Friday at Nacogdoches High School field, and if needed, Game 3 would be played at the SFA Field at 4:30 Monday. The winner will advance to meet Evadale in the second round.

In Class 2A, the Garrison Lady Bulldogs will play Hemphill in a first-round best of 3 series starting tonight in Central. Game 1 is at 6 o’clock, with Game 2 at 7 Friday. The series winner will take on the Sabine/Elysian Fields winner in area.

Let’s see if we can clear up the Dist. 20-3A baseball race a little better for you today. Carthage and Hudson are in, no questions. At issue are the third and fourth place playoff spots. Heading into Friday night’s final regular season games, Diboll is a half-game up on Center, at 6-5, while Jasper is through with district at 6-6, and the Riders are 5-6. Diboll has Hudson Friday, and Center will close out at home with Central. The Riders are in a must-win if they want post-season. There is the likelihood there could be at least one district playoff game to decide the final two playoff positions. By the way, it’s senior night for the Riders on Friday.

The Joaquin Rams were to have played Chireno in the final regular season game Friday. However, Chireno has forfeited that game, giving the Rams a 12-4 district record heading into the state playoffs. The Rams will have a playoff warm-up game at 6 Friday night at Tatum.

The Garrison Bulldogs will wrap up Dist. 19-2A baseball action tonight at home with Groveton, it’s Senior Night. Garrison is headed to post-season

The Shelbyville Dragons are at Mt. Enterprise Friday night for their season finale, and San Augustine is scheduled to be at Chester for the Wolves final baseball game of the season.

Regional track and field meets are scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday as a number of local athletes are hoping to make it out to Austin next month. Center qualifiers will be taking part in the Class 3A Region III meet in Humble; the Class 2A Region III meet that includes Garrison athletes is in Whitehouse; and the Class 1A Div. I meet’s in Palestine as with qualifiers from Timpson, Tenaha, Joaquin, Shelbyville and San Augustine taking part. The 1A, Div. II meet for the lowest enrollment schools is in Bullard.
