Local Sports Round up 4/23/14; Riders come up short at Carthage

The Center Roughriders lose on the road in Carthage last night, 4-3, a setback that snaps the Riders’ 3-game district win streak, but more importantly puts them in a tough spot as they try to claim one of the final two seeds in the state playoffs. The loss drops Center to 5-6, and depending on how Diboll’s game with Central came out and assuming Jasper beat Huntington, the Riders will have to beat Central Friday night when they play at home in the regular season finale, if they want a shot at post-season. Even then, there might have to be a district playoff game before bi-district. A lot depends on the outcome of the other district games from last night.

Shelbyville, Timpson and Garrison softball teams will enter the state playoffs on Thursday.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons will play Carlisle at 6 Thursday at Nacogdoches High School in a one-game bi-district playoff; while the Timpson Lady Bears take on Cushing in a best of 3-game bi-district series starting Thursday. Game 1 will be at 6 p.m. at Central Heights’ field. The second game will be played at 3:30 Friday at Nacogdoches High School field, and if needed, Game 3 would be played at the SFA Field at 4:30 Monday.

The Dist. 19-2A champion Garrison Lady Bulldogs will play Hemphill in a first-round best of 3 series starting Thursday night in Central. Game 1 is at 6 o’clock, with Game 2 at 7 Friday.

In last night's warm up game, Huntington takes a 3-2 win over Garrison.

Regional track and field meets are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday as a number of local athletes are hoping to make it out to Austin next month. Center qualifiers will be taking part in the Class 3A Region III meet in Humble; the Class 2A Region III meet that includes Garrison athletes is in Whitehouse; and the Class 1A Div. I meet’s in Palestine as with qualifiers from Timpson, Tenaha, Joaquin, Shelbyville and San Augustine taking part. The 1A, Div. II meet for the lowest enrollment schools is in Bullard. The top two finishers in each event advance to the state track and field meet May 9 & 10 in Austin.
